Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Alexander.
Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi! My name is Amy Alexander, I’m 23 years old and I moved from Hertfordshire, UK, (just north of London), to Nashville permanently nine months ago. I started singing lessons at six years old and have been in love with performing ever since. A lot of my love for music comes from my Dad, from a young age he raised me on the classics. He instilled in me not just a deep love for country music but also for classic and southern rock, soul and Americana.
Some of my earliest inspirations include Bonnie Raitt, Joss Stone, Carrie Underwood and Shania Twain. My family’s love for music brought us to the U.S. a few times growing up to see artists like Keith Urban, Luke Bryan and Little Big Town. I first visited Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry at the age of 14. A part of me always knew deep down that I would end up in Nashville but I wasn’t quite sure how.
It wasn’t until my college years at Nottingham University that I got the chance to study abroad at Belmont in 2019. As fate would have it, that’s also where I met my songwriting partner, guitarist, and future husband, Brandon Bernstein, while standing in line for a concert. Two and a half years later we live happily together in the heart of Nashville; writing songs, playing together, and recording.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to Nashville has definitely not been smooth! When my student visa ran out in August of 2020, covid travel restrictions prevented me from returning to the U.S. and pursuing my career. Brandon actually came out to England to be with me during that time while finishing his songwriting degree from Belmont online.
Now having returned permanently to Nashville, I am in the process of obtaining my green card and only just received my work visa last week. Since live performances are classified under ‘working’ I’ve not been able to do so up until now! This is something I have been preparing for and am really excited about.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Right now I am in the process of content creation; recording covers and developing my live set list along with my brand and artist portfolio.
After our wedding this September, Brandon and I are so excited to finish writing my debut project, finding a producer to record with and finally getting the chance to share my voice with the world. As for today, I’m most proud of myself for simply having the courage to make the move to Nashville and follow my dreams.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is staying true to myself, my faith and my dreams; performing and releasing music that gives others the confidence to chase theirs.
