Today we’d like to introduce you to KELS .

Hi KELS, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I learned most of my musical and vocal techniques from my dad, a singer. We used to sing together often, and he always had music playing. He introduced me early on to many of my influences today- Sam Cooke, Elvis, James Brown, and Kelly Rowland. By the time I was in middle school, I had conquered my stage fright and began singing at local events and coffee shops in my hometown of Pittsburgh. Music came naturally to me, especially songwriting. Jazz challenged my songwriting and vocal ability at a new level. In my late teens, I began singing at jazz clubs and in jazz ensembles. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday set the standard for my vocal ability- I wanted to sound like them as a teen. I wrote music throughout high school and put out an EP by the time I graduated. My Jazz foundation has helped me write better, more complicated melodies in my artistry. Now I’m releasing music that blends all my influences and experiences into my unique sound. Fast forward to the body of music I’m releasing- and it’s fulfilling for me.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Once I figured out what I wanted to say and how I wanted my art to sound, it’s been smooth sailing! It took me a while, but I held out on really releasing anything seriously until I was 100% sure of what I had created.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer, songwriter, performer, and most importantly, an artist. My music doesn’t compromise on trends. I am set apart by how my voice can marry jazz, soul, and pop, and a bit of country to create my own unique sound. I am most proud of the fanbase I am building. They love me for me. My honest songwriting and passionate performance style set me apart- I enjoy performing my music live more than singing in the studio.
