Daily Inspiration: Meet Frank Samuel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Samuel.

Hi Frank, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in music started as a studio manager at Lab 32 Recording Studios in Waukegan, IL. A flourishing local scene of music inspired me to begin creating my records. Everything about the music industry was inspiring, and I attempted to absorb every morsel of information I could. I found a serenity working in any facet of the business. I would later begin engineering at Grindhouse Studios at Fort Knox in Chicago. Eventually, I realized my passion was not in engineering but in songwriting and business. I would eventually move from Illinois to Tennessee to finish my degree and continue writing. I currently reside in Nashville, working in sync licensing and singing every chance I get.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is inherently a difficult venture. I was couch-surfing in Nashville for a while during the pandemic. I’ve seen my studio closed by a city inspector. I played baseball in college and eventually hung it up because of a lingering arm injury. Without a desire to be in school, I dropped out of college and started working. It was there I was presented with an opportunity to manage a studio. I’m not sure if everything happens for a reason, but I find comfort in living that way. I look back, even at “struggles,” fondly. These moments have sculpted the person I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an electronic pop musician and producer. I’ve found joy in remixing songs from the wildly talented musicians I’ve met along the way and performing my “suitcase music.” These performances use synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines, all neatly stored in a modified Escort suitcase, to live to arrange a number of my songs. It combines the flexibility and portability of acoustic instruments with the four-on-the-floor dance beats I love. It is everything I could ask for!

We love surprises, fun facts, and incredible stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am an avid chess player. Most Wednesdays, you can find me playing chess at the Villager Tavern in Nashville! I used to have a tradition with my grandma to play one game (no more, no less) a day when I was a young child.
