Today we’d like to introduce you to Grand Palace Silkscreen.
Hello Grand Palace Silkscreen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The short version: In 1998, I taught myself silkscreen printing so I could make t-shirts for my rock band. The process was very exciting for me, and I wanted to keep on experimenting with this new thing. Shirts are expensive to mess up, so I started printing on construction paper. That turned into making posters to promote shows for the band I was playing in. I began doing shirts and posters for other bands and never stopped. -Bingham.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t exactly say it’s been a ‘smooth’ road per se, but our growth has been organic. Before we landed in the building we are now, we moved the shop from its original location in Murfreesboro’s square to multiple garages, then into the original Fort Houston (now May Hosiery building), which stayed for a few years.
Moving into our current building six years ago was a significant step for us as a small company as it afforded us the space & environment to grow the business. We upgraded all our equipment, including purchasing our first auto shirt press, upgraded to two auto poster presses, and went from 4 to 11 employees in about 2 years times. Growing our team & culture has been the most challenging but rewarding part- Drew
We’ve been impressed with Grand Palace Silkscreen, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a team of creatives and problem solvers at heart (artists, illustrators & musicians) passionate about pushing our abilities and creativeness within the envelope of our trade (screen printing). We specialize in screen printing garments (shirts, hoodies, totes, tea towels, etc.) and posters.
Still, we like challenges now and then, so we also dabble in printing other specialty projects like guitar pedals, drum heads, & wallpaper, to name a few. These specialty projects are always on a ‘case-by-case’ basis, but we get great pleasure in a challenge from time to time. Our motto has always been, “We’ll pretty much print on anything flat.” – Drew.
What matters most to you?
Our vision is to help creatives manifest ideas into tangible goods that inspire others, fund causes, fuel movements (figuratively and metaphysically), and empower creativity in everyone. So our printing and end-product quality for our clients matters a lot. No two jobs are the same in screen printing, and each job can pose its own challenges. We often end up sorting the issue out while the job is on the press, but if we think we can get a better print by tearing down the job to try a new route (new films, use different mesh count on screens, or tweak the ink colors) we never hesitate.
We always aim to catch these scenarios preemptively, but sometimes you can’t and you just have to pivot and problem solve at the moment. It’s how these scenarios are addressed and handled to ensure the best end product that differentiates printing as a hobby from printing professionally. We take pride in what we do, and we care about how these products go out into the world to help our clients with their projects.
