Meet Bree Jaxson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Jaxson.

Hi Bree, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a passion for music. I started doing musicals when I was younger and then went to Patapsco High School in Baltimore, MD for performing arts. Once I graduated I joined the military and unfortunately, my dreams were put on the back burner. After my last deployment to Afghanistan and having two beautiful kids I decided that it was time to reintegrate my passion back into my life.

In 2018, I met a producer in Nashville and created my first single called “Kryptonite” and decided to really go for my dreams. Since then I have released five more singles (“Make Me Hate You”, “Country Heart City Roots”, “Giving In”, “Way Back”, and “Two Wat Street”).

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but as cliche, as it sounds, without the bumps I wouldn’t be where I am today. I truly feel I have grown from the many failures and hardships that have been thrown at me and it has just made me stronger.

I feel like as an artist that has a young family there were always internal struggles about if I was doing the right thing. Being away from my family, focusing on this dream, and stretching myself thin in order to meet every music obligation while still fulfilling my family obligations. I learned that it is defiantly a juggling act, but I realize that my children are behind me 100% and they see how you have to work in order to achieve what you want and I think that shows them a lot.

I also had struggles with my personal military and civilian career and trying to figure out how to still be succeeding in those efforts without letting my passion become the back burner again. I am an Afghan Combat War Veteran, I have served for thirteen years and obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Cyber Security all while trying to write, record, and produce country music. That in itself has been a feat and continues to be, but I believe that it will all pay off in the end.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Baltimore native. I am a mother of two, and I have been in the United States Airforce for almost thirteen years. I started out building bombs, rockets, and missiles for the A-10. After nine years of enlisted, I was commissioned and am now a Captain and a deputy commander for Cyber Space Operations for the TXANG.

I also am a GRC Cyber Security Specialist for a fortune 500 bank. I am extremely proud of this position due to the fact that I obtained my bachelor’s and master’s in Cyber Security. I am one of the first people in my immediate family to get a higher education degree.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Unfortunately, I think social media in this industry is going to continue to play a big role in marketing your music. I honestly hate it, but I get the benefits of it. But it also blasts an unrealistic standard of beauty and happiness that is unachievable. It is not authentic to who people are and I think it sets a bad standard for our children. But on the plus, it allows artists like me more of an opportunity to showcase their music.

I also am hopeful that songwriters start to see a positive shift in their compensation.

I think with the big push for more female artists in the country music scene it will continue to grow and allow artists like myself to branch out more into big labels etc. (Hopefully).
