Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylee Tate.
Hi Kaylee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to build some type of career on social media. I toyed around with Instagram, YouTube, and vine but nothing ever really seemed to stick until I downloaded Tiktok. My growth was slow at first but then I started gaining popularity primarily in my local area. Then when I started making videos on estate sales, yard sales, and thrifting, that’s when my videos really took off. I now consider myself a part-time, hopefully full-time eventually, content creator whose content primarily revolves around drifting and secondhand items. Additionally, I resell a lot of the items I find on Poshmark, so my followers who see something they might like in my videos are able to go and purchase it for themselves.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, I really had to accept that sometimes there are just periods where your growth is really stagnant. Social media relies on algorithms and sometimes those algorithms put your account in a slump where your views and follows are down a lot more than they usually are. And as much as it really sucks when you are in one of those periods, the best thing you can learn is to just keep your consistency and eventually you will be rewarded for it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m definitely known for my thrifting videos and how I style thrifted clothing pieces that I find. I am super grateful that I’ve been able to find a niche that sticks that is something that I genuinely enjoy doing. I’ve always loved fashion but being able to participate in the fashion side of social media in a sustainable way its something that I think a big part of the Tiktok community appreciates. I love showing others the absolute gems you can find secondhand and letting the world know that some of the best things out there are preowned and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I didn’t personally have a mentor, I have a degree in communications and public relations so I kind of already had an idea of how media works and how people consume media, but a lot of people have come to me asking questions and advice on how to start making videos and how to film a video. And one thing that I will say is to never be afraid to ask. No questions are wrong and stupid and they will only ever help you get more clarity on the goal that you are trying to achieve. If you have a favorite creator who makes the type of content you want to make, take inspiration from them and even go as far as asking them questions in their comments, you never know if they are going to respond.
