Conversations with Sassy VeZay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sassy VeZay. Sassy and her team share their story with us below:

Sassy is an English Country rock pop artist now living in Nashville, Tennessee.

During her childhood, Sassy’s love for music was initially inspired by the extraordinary female vocalists Olivia Newton-John and Shania Twain, who both inspired her and helped her to become the singer songwriter she is today. Formerly a county squad gymnast and dancer, Sassy qualified as a fitness instructor, honing her performance skills which took her into modelling. A chance moment seeing Shania Twain singing ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ created the germ of an idea to become a Shania Twain lookalike. Winning a talent contest performing as Shania was the platform Sassy needed to become a tribute performing artist when she realized she was destined for more as a writer and singer.

Sassy started touring England in several tribute bands as Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole and Agnetha in Abba. This developed her confidence to become a solo artist in bars and clubs singing all genres of music, alongside honing her Shania Twain performance act which she took on European tour.

During two challenging Pandemic years, Sassy had to face the challenge of bereavement when both her parents died within a few weeks of each other and her relationship with her fiance ended unexpectedly months later. Thankfully, Sassy used her heartbreak to find inspiration, pressing forward in writing and recording to achieve her dreams. She can see areas where she was held back more clearly now, but is determined to press on despite several difficult years. Back in the UK, Sassy has had huge countrywide play across the BBC, initially with her top 70 US Country Chart release SlowDance, which was also nominated in the UK Country Awards where she performed her single live on the BBC. Alongside working with some of the greats from Dolly Parton to Johnny Cash’s songwriter in Nashville- now Sassy’s song doctor- and thousands of spins on iheart radio, there is no doubt that her contribution to country music has already been remarkable.

Sassy cared for her mom during the last year of her life dying from heart and lung disease, and worked through the pain of her death by writing letters to her mom in heaven every day for the first few months after her passing. It was discovering the healing power of writing under the sun and stars that revealed Sassy’s talent as a songwriter. Those letters became her next song ‘Mom’ which she co-wrote with artist-songwriter Stephen Wrench in Florida. Mom will be released in the live sessions Nashville album with a full live band in Nashville’s Omni studios next year along with six other songs.

Two further songs, ‘Doncaster and the Kingdom’ written for military heroes charity Victoria Cross and ‘I’ll be home for Christmas’ with full orchestra, will be released as singles in November 2022. The full Nashville Omni Studio Live Sessions will be released in early 2023.

Despite having written several of her own songs previously in her career, it was Sassy’s bereavements which unlocked hidden depths in her songwriting talents. The year Sassy lost her parents, after a productive transatlantic songwriting partnership with Stephen Wrench, she took the huge decision to move from England to fulfil a promise to her mum to achieve her dream of living in Nashville. Initially flying to Wrench’s home studio Florida to record the acoustic versions, soon after Sassy moved to Nashville to record her first Nashville album.

Listening to “Slow Dance” on recently-released EP Good Girl, this country-pop song proves, without any doubt, Sassy’s talent both as a singer and as a songwriter. The driving rhythm really does its part in entertaining the audience and creates a song you never get tired of listening or dancing to. And further good news for fans of the song which did so well in the US country charts, is that there will be a dancing country remix version in Summer 2023.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
“Never, ever has the journey been a smooth road for me. Losing my parents has been such a life-changing experience. Even though I’ve carried on working, it’s slowed me down mentally and physically. I’m still trying to find my way. Without music I’d find it difficult to survive- it heals my heart and soul.

My modelling career came with its own challenges. I still photoshoot as a model, but my focus is all around my music career now, creating images for all the social media marketing that’s part of being an artist.

People say I have my mum’s heart and my dad’s drive and ambition, they were both so creative and passionate. I keep rising above setbacks, believing I can accomplish all my dreams by my God-given talents and hard work.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
“I think I am lucky, remembering the more you strive for what you want, the more ‘luck’ happens. I believe luck is part skill and part fate.

If you want something enough, luck finds you as opportunities always flow the harder you work towards your dreams. It’s like magic, the more I write and sing, the more ideas come along. The more determined I am, the more luck comes along. I don’t allow negativity or black clouds into my life. I walk away before the darkness approaches, which I feel is my personal ace up my sleeve. I meditate to keep the light in my life always inside me.”

Sassy’s own band in Nashville is forming already with two members who are both hit songwriters. From December this year, expect her to be performing her own music and Shania Twain tribute act in the three best honky tonk bars in downtown Nashville. We hear she is also planning a US and UK tour for her Nashville album and EP.

Sassy VeZay is now ready to rise and shine. Performing in Nashville will be the culmination of a tremendous amount of hard work and fulfilling her parent’s dream. We can exclusively reveal her follow up single Hometown Ghosttown will be released in January.

Reflecting on climbing the Country Radio Charts with Slow Dance Sassy said:

“I have worked really hard to make it this far despite so many set backs, but I am so delighted and thankful to have charted on the radio for the first time with my new single. I am eternally grateful to my Mum for all always believing in me, my sponsors who wish to remain anonymous but to whom I owe the opportunity to come to Nashville, my mentor Steve Bond who has supported me in so many ways over 15 years from my modelling days and finally everyone who has supported my music to be heard. And I must add my thanks to my amazing Patreon super fans who get all my pictures and music on pre-release together with personal messages. I truly believe this is just the beginning.”
