Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Volpe.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I started as a background singer for other artists and bands in 2014. I performed a lot in NYC and spent a lot time touring throughout the US. I always enjoyed having the opportunity to learn and serve other people’s music, but something was missing. Then, in late 2017, I decided to focus more on writing and recording my music as an artist. Since then, I have been writing, collaborating, and releasing music under my name Anna Volpe and other side projects. In 2020, I signed up with a licensing/publishing company called Think Music. They found me on social media (which shows you how important social media is!), and working with them has opened so many doors for me – they help me connect with other writers, help schedule sessions, and pitch my music for tv/film. I have a team supporting me, which is essential in this industry too! I moved to Nashville about a year ago which has been a game-changer. I’m constantly meeting and working with many talented writers and producers. Although it was a huge adjustment, I am so happy I did because it has been the best move for my career.
I am looking forward to what’s to come in 2023. More writing, recording and releasing, and maybe I will get back into performing, which I haven’t done since the pandemic.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
There have been challenges over the years! The industry is at such a fast pace, and most times, it can feel overwhelming to keep up. I still, to this day, have to take a step back sometimes and refocus myself and my goals and intentions. When I shifted from background singer to artist, it was a massive change for me, and there was just a lot I had to work through. It also made me realize how lonely a music career can be. As someone who is pretty extroverted and loves being around other people, I leaned into collaboration and writing with others remotely or in person. It helps to feel connected and be around like-minded people who understand what I’m going through or thinking about.
Please tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others.
I am a singer, songwriter, composer, and artist originally from New York City but now based in Nashville. I predominantly write in the indie-pop & folk space. I love writing music that makes you feel and think. Music has always done that for me, so I hope to give that to others too. I also have an alter ego project called Annie Foxx which is a 180 turn – it’s darker alt-pop that brings all the brutally raw and honest vibes. As a Scorpio, this type of music speaks to my soul. And again, I try to be as open as possible in my lyrics and voice. I am proud of the music I have released this year under both projects of mine. Although the music ranges in different styles and themes, it’s rooted in emotion. I always try to be honest and stay true to what I know and how I feel; I hope it reflects in my music.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
New trends and changes, I am sure, are upon us soon in the music industry! You can’t ever really know what’s to come, but I am sure we will continue to see artists grow through social media, especially Tiktok. I wonder what will come after Tiktok, though, because we all know someone will create a new app, and I wonder where we go from here! I try to remember that although trends change and shifts happen, my intentions and values as an artist don’t have to change with them!
