Exploring Life & Business with Mya Addison of Addison Luxe Event Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Addison.

Hi Mya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story began back home in California, where I was born and raised. I have always been super drawn to anything that allowed me to express myself creatively, granting me the feeling of freedom that art so often did. Having strong business-oriented women in my family, such as my now passed Grandma Great, gave me the entrepreneurial spirit that made me believe it was possible to become successful and self-made. Growing up, I was never really a conventional person. I have always had huge dreams and never could imagine myself living a life where every day was always the same. It just was not fathomable to me. Thankfully for me, my aunt and uncle, who raised me most of my life, never pushed me into thinking that I needed to do what everyone around me was doing to be successful. Instead, they encouraged me to pursue what makes me happy, all while still being mindful of creating stability in my adult life. I never attended college when all of my friends did, and in all reality, when it came to that time in life when everyone was applying for their dream schools, I didn’t have one. This is because I wanted to attend art school, but I needed to wrap my mind around spending nearly 18k a semester for an education. So, to say the least, like most young adults, I was lost and scared and had no idea what I would do with my life. Fast forward a few years, I became a phlebotomist or a professional vampire. However, you want to look at it. I know what you’re thinking. How did this art kid who had no intention of ever going to school end up working in the medical field as a phlebotomist in a trauma center in Napa, California, during the peak of Covid? Honestly, it was all a blur, but I found that I ended up being good at it and genuinely believed that taking people’s blood and saving lives would be my forever career. Spoiler alert, it wasn’t; It went like this, and for all my military spouses, you already know how the story goes. I fell in love with a soldier, and within a year of meeting, we were happily married, and I found myself leaving everything I knew behind to live in Tennessee. I thought my life was on the right path back in California but little did I know it was just beginning.

Here in Tennessee, I have been given the luxury of genuinely discovering who I am, what makes me happy, and what my purpose is. After much self-reflection, I began to feel that there was something beyond my journey in the medical field that was awaiting me to discover it. I decided to take a break from working in the hospital and invest in myself. That is precisely what I did when creating Addison Luxe. While I still love phlebotomy and will continue to maintain all my certifications and licenses, something in my heart was aching for that liberating feeling that creative work has always given me. Addison Luxe was the answer to what I felt was missing. I wanted to be able to take my creative spirit and turn it into something useful for others. I thought about selling art as I have done in the past, but it didn’t feel right. I wanted to do more. I wanted my art to be an experience. I wanted to provide my community with something fun and new that in-cooperated my artistic abilities. This is how Addison Luxe was born. A luxury picnic and party business allow me to curate designs and atmospheres with my clients in mind while expressing my creativity. Addison Luxe is so much more than just a picnic in the park. It is a luxury experience where you can feel all the feelings that creating art has always given me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, as much as I wish I could say it was easy, it wasn’t. That is okay, though, because honestly, if all of this came easy, it wouldn’t be a genuine experience. All the greatest things in life do not come without struggle. To be completely transparent, starting a business is never a perfect experience, which should be normalized. In society, we’re taught only to show the shiny and pretty parts of life, the finished product. Never the process, the sweat, tears, and sacrifice it takes to start a new project and make something of it. There is this trend that I have been seeing on TikTok recently, where business owners, creators, etc., list a few things they are currently struggling with, and even though it could be perceived as sad, I love that trend because it shows the realness of people. It’s raw and true, making a business more relatable when they give its audience a sneak peek of the behind-the-scenes. So in honor of said trend and to keep it simple. I am currently struggling with this as a business owner: not allowing my not-so-perfect mental health to get the best of me, worrying if my work is good enough and if I can keep up with others, and being afraid of not knowing what the future holds. These are some of my struggles, but I am okay with making peace with them. I encourage all my entrepreneurs to do the same.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
If I can give one piece of advice crucial for all my business babies getting ready to spread their wings and fly, it is probably the most cliche thing you will ever hear, but it is true. Do not give up. No matter what you are pursuing, please, please do not give up on yourself ever. Starting a business, a project, or investing in any dream is never easy, but if you take it and give it everything you’ve got, I mean everything, you will make it and soar. Never stop promoting yourself, never stop educating yourself, never creating, and never stopping. It will all pay off one day. Keep up to date with social media and which platforms your target audience engages with the most, and it will help with your marketing and guarantee that you are reaching the people you want to reach. So if you haven’t already, research your audience and find out everything about them because that is the key to finding the clientele you want to contact. Best of luck; you got this.
