Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Pfeffer.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Nashville on a whim after chiropractic school. I didn’t want to go back to Chicago, didn’t want to go to Pittsburgh where my then-finance was from, and didn’t want to stay in Florida. So, I picked a spot on a map. I tried finding a job when I got here, but the only places hiring were high-volume offices (the kind that see 100 patients in a day), which I’m personally not a fan of (some people love that type of place, I just enjoy doing more movement analysis and soft-tissue work than that allows). I worked a few months with a doctor who did a really awesome allergy-elimination technique, but it wasn’t what I loved, which was sports and active care. I ended up going out on my own and starting a mobile practice where I traveled to all of my patients. After a couple of years of quick growth, I finally found space in Crossfit Nashville, where I’ve been ever since. I’ve also since hired a second doctor and opened a second location in Brentwood.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I started with nothing but a cupping set, a cheap soft tissue tool, and a portable table. I under-charged despite working around everyone’s schedules and traveling to them because I was deathly afraid of out-pricing people and not having enough patients to cover the bills. I even needed a little help from my mom for a couple of months rent because I really wasn’t making much at all. My patient-base grew so quickly I didn’t have time to integrate an electronic health records software, so I was doing all of the notes by hand. I was treating 60+ hours a week, doing all the billing and finances (not well, mind you), and absolutely exhausted… and still undercharging out of fear. Eventually, I got a space and it made it easier to treat, but I never said “no” to anyone. I overworked myself for years until I was finally forced to start taking care of myself (Thank you, COVID shutdown). I’m still terrible at the business side of things, but definitely getting better. Plus, I have help from Lydia, the other doctor in the practice, as well as my fiancé and a social media guru.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Voodoo Chiropractic?
Voodoo Chiropractic isn’t your typical chiropractic office. We do movement screens and assessments to find the underlying problem so that it doesn’t come back; we do a plethora of soft tissue techniques to give patients a more well-rounded treatment; we spend time teaching corrective exercises and correcting form; but mostly, we spend a lot of TIME with our patients. Our average visit is 30 minutes long because it allows us time to hear from our patient, reassess, and treat. We want to provide the highest quality care to active people at an affordable price.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve had a lot of people help me out along the way. My fiancé, Evan, is always trying to help me become better and more efficient at business. My mom helped me out financially when I was starting out and had nothing had nothing. My grandpa encouraged me to not move home when things got hard. My first patients gave me a chance before I even had a place to treat; trusting me & welcoming me into their homes and sharing my information with their friends and family. Dustin and Preston at CrossFit Nashville brought me into their gym and helped me grow in my first physical space. My mentor, Maria, from chiropractic school, and my preceptor, Josh, taught me an incredible amount of information I still use today. They also encouraged me to take outside-of-the-box courses and constantly be learning. And Don, who has since passed, is the reason for the practice name; he used to tell his primary care doctor that he had a “witch doctor for that.”
The best thing about being referral-based is that every patient who’s ever shared mine/our information with someone else is a part of our growth, story & success; it’s why I’ve our business model. This list should be hundreds of people long. So if you’re reading this and you’re a part of the Voodoo Family, truly, Thank you.
