Meet Steve & Carolina May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven May. Them and their team share their story with us below:

In April of 2021, we relocated to Nashville from Austin, TX in order to acquire property suitable for farm animals… and our budget. During our time in Austin, we were lucky enough to find ourselves volunteering at the Austin Farm Sanctuary, and Central Texas Pig Rescue. We absolutely loved our time there and were inspired to start our own farm sanctuary. So after no luck finding land in the lone star state, we decided to relocate to Nashville.

Our mission is to provide a safe haven for rescued farm animals while growing awareness of animal welfare issues.

Our farm will be a welcoming environment for visitors to meet and interact with farmed animals. We believe it is important that people are able to experience the amazing personalities of these animals.

May Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit corporation based in Cheatham County TN.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With any new endeavor, there are always challenges. Thankfully we made many great connections with other rescues that were a great resource, even taking our calls in the wee hours of the morning. You never know when an emergency will arise. Running a farm sanctuary is a 24/7 job.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Steve has over 10 years of experience taking care of animals, mostly dogs. Before becoming our farm manager he successfully ran two pet care companies.

Carolina is a nurse anesthetist and has been for almost 10 years. Before that, she was a neuroscience ICU nurse in Jackson, MS where she is from.

What’s next?
Our long-term plan is to sustainably grow our farm as long as we can afford to give each animal the best life possible.

Ultimately we want to continue to take in rescues and increase our impact on our community and spread awareness of animal rights and their desire to live.
