Conversations with Melissa Church

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Church.

Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I started Bad Science Jokes in 2012 while I was a junior in high school. The jokes we made in class were added to the original Tumblr blog. I took a little break senior year, and the page exploded when I returned! I began working on BSJ while bedridden from an illness right after graduation. I spent every day working and working on creating content and studying to stay up with scientific trends, as well as social media trends. Over time, I began working in digital marketing using Bad Science Jokes as my test area. I can try new content styles and ideas on a large audience before bringing them to a client’s page. About 2 years ago, I started my social media marketing agency Digi-Buzz! I can do what I love with comedy, science, and helping small businesses. I’m living the dream!

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. It has not. As I mentioned a bit ago, I became very ill when I was 18. I had worked since age 10 to be an actress. I had been in a few small movies, commercials, and such, but I was planning on moving to California when I became bedridden after a medical error. I spent every day staring at the walls until I started working more seriously on Bad Science Jokes. BSJ was my only ‘escape’ to the real world. I could talk with people from around the world and share smiles even when I couldn’t. It took almost two years to regain my health enough to return to college. By that time, my dreams began to change. I started more seriously pursuing digital marketing and thinking about what I truly wanted out of my life. When the pandemic happened, it changed how a lot of people lived. Digi-Buzz was created during the pandemic and could thrive as I tried to give small businesses the in-house marketing feel without the price. So many businesses got hurt during the pandemic, and I wanted to help. If I could help these businesses be found by people, ensuring they could stay open, I was doing something good. Life is always going to throw obstacles at you. It’s how you roll with the punches that matter.

Please tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others.
It’s hard to explain what it is I do. I am the administrator of Bad Science Jokes (@bad_science_jokes), an online community of over 1 million people worldwide. I take complex science topics and make them bite-sized and easy to digest. I make science more fun and less ‘scary. We all know a lot of work goes into STEM fields, but finding a group of people who all relate to the struggles makes it a bit easier. Laughter can help you remember things better; did you know that? Throughout all the fun of Bad Science Jokes, we can help people learn. It’s all serious!

I also am the CEO of Digi-Buzz Social Media Marketing (www.digi-buzz.biz). Our main selling point is 24/7 on-call emergency service. The internet doesn’t sleep, so why does your social media manager? The reasoning comes from an old client at an agency I worked for who had an employee who said very nasty things to a customer. The customer got his tyraid on tape, and the entire town knew within an hour. Our agency was aware at 8 am the following day of the damage. He went out of business within the year. I promised I wouldn’t let that happen to another client. Hence, the 24/7 on-call emergency line. We won an award for Best Marketing Agency in the Region after only a year and a half in business. I have won the Emerging Leader Award from Women Lead Change and the International Millennial Leader award from the Universal Women’s Network due to my work and volunteer activities this year.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Nashville! I have a few clients who live there, and I do my best to visit as often as possible to keep their businesses up to date online. My favorite thing about Nashville is its culture. I love how you can walk down the street and always find something interesting. I regularly commute for work to Nashville- basically once a month! The traffic gets on my nerves now and then, and tourist season makes it almost impossible to visit downtown. Or maybe that’s just me.
