Rising Stars: Meet James Camacho

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Camacho.

Hi James, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started doing stand-up comedy and acting when I was in college. My entire childhood I always felt like a creative person but grew up in an immigrant household so it wasn’t until I went away that I could finally express myself.

I went full-time entertainer about 6 months out of college and moved to a tiny apartment with no bathroom in NYC soon after. There was no shortcut. I did shows every night in NYC and shows all over the country every weekend and now I’m able to live in a medium-sized apartment with 1 bathroom. Yay!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve been fortunate that I live so close to a major city and I have support from close ones. The struggles I’ve dealt with are the amounts of rejection you have to deal with. It can take its toll but my passion and love for the art have kept me going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a stand-up comedian and actor. I’ve been seen on Kevin Hart’s LOL Network, the CBS shows “FBI” and “Kevin Can Wait”, and also in the movie “Before I Go”. I also perform at comedy clubs all over the country. I am most proud of a recent military tour I did performing for the troops in the middle east.

I am also proud of the shows I get to do in New York City on the weekends, just because it’s so hard to get booked in the greatest city in the world. What sets me apart from others is my unique background. I am Chinese and Puerto Rican.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My undying love for stand-up comedy and acting is my most important characteristic of success. Without it, I would not get very far.
