Today we’d like to introduce you to Alli Paige.
Hi Alli, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started writing songs the moment I could form coherent sentences, but only started taking music seriously in high school. I started out by taking guitar lessons and writing some songs that I refused to let anyone hear. I eventually worked up the courage to show one of my guitar teachers some of the better ones I wrote. He thought they were good and gave me some suggestions, and it lit a fire under me to keep practicing my writing. During quarantine in 2020, I wrote parts of a song a day.
I forced myself to sit at the piano or play my guitar until my fingers were almost bleeding so I could make myself write something even if it wasn’t good or if I wasn’t inspired by anything. At the end of 2020, I wrote one of my favorite songs I have written. I called it Jersey Snow and it ended up being the first song I ever released. I have since released two other songs and I’m working really hard with the help of some of my insanely talented friends to get more music out in the world. I am so excited to share what I have coming next!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I was a junior in high school, I decided that I was going to go to Belmont University as a songwriting major. Keep in mind I had only been taking guitar lessons for two years at that point. I told my parents that I was dead set on it, and they were very skeptical, and rightfully so. I was very inexperienced, would be 10 hours away from home, and all alone in a brand new, massive city. Their skepticism started rubbing off on me, but I didn’t let that stop my persistence.
I was so determined to convince them into letting me go, that I made an entire PowerPoint with the pros and cons and my plan for if I went there. I guess I did a good job because we then scheduled a trip out to Nashville from Texas to see the campus. I fell in love with it and knew that was my new home and that exact moment was the starting point of my following my dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter and am trying to make a career out of writing and releasing music. People who listen to my music would probably agree that my songs are insanely honest and vulnerable. I tend to write from personal experiences, and I feel that it is very apparent in my lyrics. I feel that the candor in my songs makes me stand out among the thousands of other talented musicians here in Nashville.
I don’t shy away from the messy and ugly details. I think that giving people this very vulnerable part of me in my music might help them relate the song to something that they are going through. As a songwriter, that’s all I could ever hope for; to have people relate to my songs and feel less alone.
Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Honestly, just asking people to have coffee with you is the best way, in my opinion, to get to network with people. I have made so many amazing connections just by reaching out to people over email and asking if they would be willing to get coffee or lunch with me. One thing I have learned that I think everyone should know is that you never know who could be one step away from who you’re talking to.
I have been in meetings or conversations with people who personally know some of the biggest names on the charts right now. That being said, be kind to everyone you meet, even if they reject you or are rude to you. You never know what opportunities may be ahead just because you were nice to someone.
