Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Jackson.
Hi Jamie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Back in 2020, much like the rest of the world, I took to social media for laughs during that unprecedented time. I had been making my own memes on my personal Instagram page for a few years but never thought of making my own page. Until I had two different friends mention it to me. And what better time to try something new than in the middle of a global pandemic? So in September 2020, I created @Humorous_Resources, a safe place for work professionals to commiserate about their corporate lives.
It took off quickly with many people working from home, it was nice to find humor in our mundane corporate life.
Shortly after @Humorous_Resource’s success, I created @Millennial_Misery a place where millennials can submerge themselves in nostalgia.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One thing I always say is I am 100% me 100% of the time. And that reflects in what I post and in my humor. Not everything I create, or post is going to be a hit. And that is okay.
Because the next one might be. I am very conscious of what I am posting as far as to not offend anyone. Obviously, humor can walk that fine line, but I think it’s important to make people laugh without controversy.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Starting out making memes and then diving into a meme page, I wanted to make sure my page stood out. Being a human resource professional for the last 18 years I know the stigma that comes with the dreaded HR Department. I wanted to put a hilarious spin on “The HR Department” but also a safe place for other HR professionals to laugh about our misery. @Humorous_Resources has become so much more than a meme page. It’s a place for HR professionals to come together and laugh and also to get advice. I get many DMs asking for other professional opinions – I will typically post it on my story and share other advice. I am proud to say I have a small slice in the HR pie making a difference.
Another thing that sets me apart on my pages is I always credit the creator. I know I am not the funniest person and I love to share good content but with that comes credit. I always tag and add the creator @ in the caption. I have been able to form real friendships with fellow creators because of this. Sometimes they will even send me their content first to post because they know I will give them the credit they deserve. I am finally seeing, and more pages credit the creators and I can’t help but think I was a small part of that push.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
If you are looking to jump into content creation or meme making a key piece of advice would be just post it. It might not perform well today but in one month it might go viral.
Also be consistent – if you can post daily, do it. If not, film as many as you can at once and stagger posting throughout the week. Third and final, hashtags have more power than you think. Use them wisely.
