Daily Inspiration: Meet Beth Garner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Garner.

Hi Beth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been playing all styles of music as a guitarist since I was 14. Currently, in Nashville, I play local venues, weddings, and events in the style of country, soul, RnB, and rock. I endorse Fender, Supro, Pigtronix effects, MXR/Way Huge guitar pedals and effects, and Fralin pickups.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were two struggles: getting up to par with the music with low pay and not falling into alcoholism. Being a musician, you are going to make a lot of sacrifices with family and luxuries because it’s not always a lucrative choice.

The notion that “music is fun” so it isn’t necessary to pay a living wage permeates our culture, especially Nashville. A town where they don’t pay the marching band at Vanderbilt, and the coaches get paid millions, reinforces that fallacy. Playing for a base and passing a tip jar is common.

As a result, being a Nashville musician, you have to have a good hustle and be able to play many styles, and thousands of songs well and on the spot if you want to make it here. If you struggle with alcoholism, as I did, it really has to be in check if you want to keep your gigs, professional relationships, and reputation.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a woman who plays guitar well and I love what I do. Hopefully, younger generations of women will have an easier road if I’ve been doing this right.

How do you define success?
Not quitting. Having my needs met through my work.
