Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Hunter.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I wanted to be a chef. At 17 years old I applied to culinary school at The Art Institute of Atlanta. Right after high school, I start culinary school. In my 2nd year, I transferred to Johnson and Wales in Charleston. My roommate Sarah and I had a great time there in Charleston! I did my internship in Vienna, Austria at the Three Horsemen restaurant.
Being done at Johnson and Wales, Sarah and I started a catering business. I had my oldest son so food took the back burner. When I met my husband he was about to graduate from culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu after getting out of the USMC. We have a total of 3 children. A few years ago I opened a donut shop in Lagrange, GA called Dixie Donuts. Loved every second! COVID hit and we had to close. We relocated to Alaska and I started my catering again as we had no restaurants from September-March. I cooked for locals and tourists. Now we are back in Alabama!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. Having a family took my priority as kitchen life isn’t good for a family. But once they got older, I was able to incorporate food and the love of creating for my kids.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Having a specialty is difficult for me. There are times when I’m going through a pastry love and then there are times when it moves to more savory dishes.
I love being able to bring joy with my food. I’m beyond proud that my kids love and appreciate food from so many different cultures. To me that’s the best thing about food; it brings us together as humans…once you take that first bite into this amazing dish…you melt into your seat and just grin. That’s what I love bringing to people.
What do you think about luck?
I’m lucky with my support system. From my parents who always pushed me to be the best to my husband who is my biggest cheerleader. Having those people in your life pushes you to make sure you don’t like them or yourself.
