Rising Stars: Meet Megan Pinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Pinson.

Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story… where do people start? From birth? From when they had some sort of life-changing experience? I won’t do either of those. Well, maybe the birth thing. I grew up in western Kentucky, spending most of my days outside because it was life before the internet. We lived around many acres of woods, trails, tobacco barns, and fishing ponds – typical Kentucky stuff. I loved it, and my love for photography started out there with disposable cameras. I would eventually evolve and start forcing my friends to model for portraits in my bedroom by middle school. But when puberty hit, I put all that on the back burner and became some stupid, delusional version of myself – a teenager. Lots of life happened. I got married (too young), had two beautiful, crazy boys, and moved to Nashville. My boys sparked my love for photography again when I started documenting their life.

After a few years of living in Nashville, I finally admitted to myself that I wasn’t happy with my major life choices and asked my husband for a divorce. It was messy, so we won’t get into that. But it was the hardest thing I ever did and that made me feel like I could do anything. (Well, looky there, my life-changing experience). I continued to rebuild myself in every sense of the word, took care of my boys, worked long shifts at a bbq joint, fell in love, moved to Murfreesboro, got married on a Friday the 13th in October, and gained the most beautiful family that I could never dream up. Wow, that was one long run-on sentence. Fast forward a few years, and we got pregnant! And after quitting my miserable job in the corporate world, (nothing against the wonderful people I worked with. I just hated being in a box) I took the plunge and started my photography business. My daughter had mostly everything to do with that because I wanted so badly to stay at home with her, and so far so good!

Here I am today, writing about my story and the love for what I do, and expecting another addition to the family. (Yes!) I can’t believe how blessed I am, and how proud I am of myself. I love photography because it can be so raw, it can be anything you want it to be. It shows things from a different perspective. And when people appreciate your vision and see the beauty as you do, well I can’t even describe the satisfaction that brings. It’s art, man. And that’s a beautiful addition to life. Thank you for reading this obscenely long description of a small percentage of my life’s story. I hope you take the plunge and make yourself proud, too.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This town (like many others) is saturated with photographers. And most of them were born here, so they got the hookup. And, hey, that’s ok! I had to learn, and am still learning to stay true to myself. There is a market for my art, I’ve seen it. We just have to get the word out amongst more of our people. My business is growing slowly, but surely!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love capturing people in their most unexpected, blissful state. Sure, posed portraits are beautiful, but there’s something special to me about candid. I primarily work with expecting mothers, families, children & babies, and small business owners for their brand shoots.

Nature is very inspiring to me so I have to get those sessions in every once in a while, but I’m more of a lifestyle photographer, I guess. Simple backgrounds, natural light, muted colors, and moody feels are what I aim for. I love the ethereal feel too. If you’re looking to dress up like a fairy and hit the woods, let me know.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Oh gosh, this is a hard question. I grew up with two of my cousins with so many great memories. Honestly, anything involving them and us making fun of the adults was my favorite time.
