Daily Inspiration: Meet Jennifer + Josh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer + Josh.

Hi Jennifer and Josh, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We (Jennifer + Josh) met through our church (and Josh’s wife) and have been friends since 2010. We have even attended each other’s weddings and celebrated the births of babies! In October 2021, Jennifer had the idea to watch over 40 new, made-for-TV holiday movies (mostly Hallmark) and review them on her personal Instagram feed.

Immediately, the response was great and friends and family were enjoying the content. Josh and his wife joined in on the fun and would send Jennifer their reviews of the movies they were watching for her to feature, as well. It was a lively thing to do for the holiday season and we joked that we should start a podcast someday. Well…

Fast forward to August of 2022, and we were at a mutual friend’s birthday dinner and the idea of a podcast came up.

As the night went on, the idea went from an enjoyable “bit” to a reality. The following week, “Do You Watch What I Watch?” was born! We ordered a podcaster audio starter kit online, created a website, and started an account with our podcast host. Our friend, Nick Schwarz, is a published songwriter and producer of chart-topping songs. Jennifer reached out to Nick to create a theme song, giving him (very little) direction of “something jolly.” The song Nick created represented the merry-making/up-tempo feel we wanted to carry through to the podcast. The first episode of Season 1 premiered on September 27th, 2022 and we have been enjoying the (sleigh) ride ever since!

The premise is pretty simple: Jennifer and Josh will watch a made-for-TV movie and recap the highs, lows, and everything in between on each episode. We recap the movie so anyone can enjoy the podcast, even if they haven’t seen the movie. Admittedly, this genre of the movie can have a bad reputation for using repeated storylines and predictability, but we think it’s all part of the charm. In today’s climate of a seemingly never-ending news cycle of negativity, there is something endearing about a movie with low stakes and laughing about it with your friends afterward.

We have released over 30 episodes in the first six months and have now started to expand our content outside of holiday movies to chat about other made-for-TV films. To date, “Do You Watch What I Watch?” has been ranked in the top 50 on the Apple Podcast TV Reviews chart, and is ranked in the top 10% of podcasts globally, according to Listennotes.com.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Forming the podcast and creating the content has been easy. Bantering and having dialog have been seamless.

Recording (remotely) and uploading audio and video content has proven to have multiple technical challenges. For a while, it seemed like we would solve one problem and replace it with another. We think we have FINALLY figured out how to have consistency with our content. (Knocks on the wood just to be on the safe side).

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Our plan is to do this podcast as long as it keeps bringing us (and our listeners) joy!

We would love to continue to build our audience into a loyal community, eventually gain a few sponsors, and consider adding a few live shows in the mix, too! As we say at the end of every episode, ‘May your days be merry and bright!’
