Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxwell Sebastian.
Hi Maxwell, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I moved to Nashville in 2018. Starting over anywhere is difficult, but Nashville is as good a place as any. Been making art most of my life, just kept up with that.
Animated some music videos, exhibited some art here and there, watched some decent music, and decided to open a picture frame business in Crieve Hall in 2022 called S & S Framing with my homie Ryan Sobb. We’re open for business Tue- Sat 10 am-6 pm. Located at 4811 Trousdale Dr. suite I, Nashville TN 37220.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is hard, but it’s glorious. Ups and downs keep you limber. A rollercoaster ride is best enjoyed with your eyes wide open.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
You might ask: where are the violet-speckled petals?
I live at the bottom of a hill. Blocks away from the river. My house has no name. But each spring small yellow flowers push up from the wet mud. The smell carries indoors on the soles of my shoes. What memories do you have of a heat stroke night? Passed out in the rose bush. I remember hiding in the limbs of magnolia trees, among their blossoms.
You haven’t met them, but I recall my friends, down in the grass. Dreaming of sweat-stained sheets in August. I’m trying to tell you, this is still life. With the cruelty of a blossom howling at midday. I paint stupid pictures, for a stupid and cruel time. I want the viewer to walk away hopeless, and curious so that they can talk to a friend with compassion and without expectation.
Any big plans?
The future doesn’t give a hoot what you have laid out. But, for the short term, I plan on eating a good sandwich at Fat Belly Pretzel Bakery & Deli around the corner from me in East Nashville.
Giving my homie, Sugar Danny, a hug. Keep my ears open to what Joe Wolfe-Mazeres is serving up on WXNA with his show E2TG – ear to the ground. Last but not least, go shake what my mama gave me.
