Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasera Brown.
Kasera, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! My initial start in education was working as a part-time substitute teacher while in undergraduate school. As a political science major, I decided to try something new and step into the classroom. Everyone around me sensed that this was my calling, but of course, I tried to run away from it.
Fast forward to now, I have over ten years of classroom experience, am fully licensed to teach in two states, have a Master of Arts in Teaching, and most of all, I love it! Having a background and degree in both politics and education has led to finding a lane within my career field, educational equity:
1.) What is the required literacy curriculum in schools? And is there data to show its effectiveness?
2.) Are there laws prohibiting students from receiving a quality education?
3.) Why have teachers not received a federal raise to match today’s educational climate?
All of this has led me to showcase different aspects of being an educator on social media. My goal is to advance in the field as a political educational specialist!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. I have actually tried to walk away multiple times.
Working in a Title I school district left me feeling hopeless. We cared so much about those students, but there were many negative factors that only our state government could fix, and supplying the necessary resources to African-American students in the Southeast Delta region of Arkansas was clearly not on the agenda. I had to see if this was something that I truly wanted to do, so I made a hasty decision.
Relocating to Dallas has made my decision to remain in education so much easier! I now have the resources to be completely successful as an educator.
We’ve been impressed with Equity and Education, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have the pleasure of informing the entire world about the political side of education!
The goal of my brand, Equity and Education, is to spread educational awareness including topics such as teacher retention, special education reform, HBCU funding, public school policies, and much more.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Most definitely consistency and competitiveness!
