Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Winn.
Hi Charlie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I worked in finance and accounting for corporations for almost three decades.
My natural curiosity and thirst for learning afforded me the opportunity to experience multiple disciplines including mergers and acquisitions, business operations, business finance, corporate legal, auditing, business taxes, and all aspects of business accounting. I was also fortunate enough to receive promotions into roles overseeing these areas culminating in Corporate Controller and Chief Financial Officer positions. This experience was gained in various sized businesses from small privately held companies to large publicly traded companies.
It has not been a smooth road, for sure. Just like a lot of small businesses, we have faced issues like finding reliable personnel, client fit concerns, and making correct choices for technology. I realized I had a broad spectrum of knowledge and experience that translated well for small to mid-sized businesses. These businesses were often under-served. That’s when I decided to strike out on my own.
In order to meet the growing client base, I have since created a company with a former colleague. We specialize in business consulting (including restructuring), monthly accounting, and annual income tax preparation. Our goal is to bring all of our experience and knowledge to businesses that are growing, wanting to expand, or looking to sell.
We’ve been impressed with Abacus Business Partners Inc, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
While we can’t be “everything to everybody,” we strive to meet the financial oversight needs of small to medium-sized businesses.
As I said earlier, we are strong business consultants (including restructuring), monthly accounting, and annual income tax preparation. Our emphasis is on immersing ourselves in the client’s business and looking at the “big picture” of their needs.
How do you define success?
I have a great client in Indiana who has had incredible success in multiple businesses over the course of six decades.
He once told me every business relationship or transaction should be a win/win or it shouldn’t be completed. As he said, it doesn’t mean both parties get exactly everything they want, but they get proper value out of the relationship or transaction.
I took that to heart and use it as my benchmark for successful business. So, my belief is that success in business is both parties feel they receive reasonable value from a relationship or transaction.
