Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lester.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Sarah, I am 23 years old. I realized in my senior year of high school I wanted to become an Esthetician. I enrolled in beauty school when I was 18 and graduated at 19 years old. I absolutely fell in love with learning everything about esthetics… the facials, waxing, makeup, etc. but most importantly once I was performing services on clients, I loved building a connection and making them feel beautiful.
After I became licensed, I got my first job at a waxing chain. I’m thankful for that job because it got me to where I am now. I eventually realized I wanted something better for my clients and for myself so in 2021, I opened my very own business, Waxology By Sarah. I wanted a more intimate setting where everyone felt welcome and it was a more personable experience. The last thing you want is to feel like you’re getting waxed in a doctor’s office setting, let’s be real! Everyone deserves to feel comfortable at their self-care appointments. I feel so lucky to be where I am today and to have such an amazing supportive circle.
Once I did go out on my own I was able to create an Instagram. I started having fun with my creativity and making wax melts before clients. I never realized it would grow so much. My videos started reaching a million views. I ended up on the Snapchat Discover pages a few times, & then the wax brand Starpil Wax reached out for me to become a partner with them as well. All these opportunities would have never happened if I didn’t have a leap of faith and decided to open my own business!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a hard road for sure but very rewarding. I think since I am so young I sometimes felt like I gave up my youth. I have been so committed to working hard for my future self since I got out of high school. Once I became an entrepreneur and opened my business it became really hard. I struggled with very bad anxiety and being so scared of what my future held.
It was scary just trusting myself and not being able to fall back on a paycheck. I was worried about failing and letting myself down. I just had so much going through my head. Looking back, I’m so thankful I didn’t let my fear stop me because I’m so happy where I am now. I really couldn’t have done it without my parents being there for me and letting me know they got me no matter what.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I own my very own wax salon. I offer face and full body waxing, brow lamination, & vajacials. Brazilians are definitely my top service though!
I feel like my colorful brand sets me apart from others. My studio is like a rainbow Lisa Frank World. It’s super groovy and has a y2k vibe to it.
(Probably because I was born in 2000 and it heals my inner child). I wanted my studio to have good music playing, pretty neon lights, the lava lamp going, etc so it can help you relax!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for someone starting out, really with anything in life is to just do it scared.
Don’t overthink too much. Your mind really can be your worst enemy sometimes. You’ll be so grateful that you did it and realize how strong you actually are & what you’re capable of.
