Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Anderson.
Hi Gloria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a military brat, I moved six times before the seventh grade. My parents tried to keep three sources of consistency through our family moves. These were church on Sundays, playing soccer, and taking music lessons. The lessons started with piano, and then voice, and eventually guitar.
While I was growing up, I wrote little tunes about what I saw on long car rides. My family eventually settled down in Luling, Texas. In high school, I was mentored by a professional songwriter, Renee Coale Willis, who introduced me to Belmont, Nashville, and the music industry as a whole.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University in the fall of 2019. By the spring, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and I was forced to leave campus and go back home.
When I finally returned to Nashville, the Music City I fell in love with, didn’t seem the same. While I was still writing songs, I missed live music and struggled to settle into campus life–like so many of my peers. Although the town seemed like it lost its voice, I still found a sense of community that pushed me to keep creating.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a songwriter because I fell in love with songs at a young age. I’ve learned that music is such a gift, and it always brought me a sense of home while I moved.
I recently reached a goal of mine to release my debut EP, “Households.” I am so grateful I was able to work with friends to create a collection of songs that tell the story of my childhood as a military brat. Since I spent so much time in the car, I strive to write songs the listener can see and I hope my music takes them somewhere.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is to value those who open the door behind them because I would not be here today without those who have helped me.
