Hidden Gems: Meet Amanda Cantrell of Center MedSpa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Cantrell.

Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Amanda Cantrell, a student Esthetician at Chattanooga College MDTC, and I’ve had the pleasure of calling Chattanooga my home for most of my life. I’m blessed to have an 8-year-old daughter & two fur babies, as well as two older sisters, a supportive mother, and a beautiful niece.

In addition to being a woman myself, my daughter is one of the many reasons why the subject of beauty is so important to me. I want her to know that she’s beautiful in every way, from the inside out, regardless of whatever beauty trend is happening in the world. My philosophy is that beauty comes from within, not only spiritually, but literally by way of diet & lifestyle habits. Sure, makeup & filtered apps are great, but unrealistic so it’s best to adopt habits that will help you look and feel like the best version of YOU.

I intend to help my community love their skin through my approach holistic approach of cultivating great skin from the inside out, with the aid of cutting-edge technologies. Genetics is a key factor in skincare outcomes but one’s diet & overall lifestyle are just as important. As an esthetician (aka, “skin care therapist”) who helps my clients clean, beautify, and maintain their appearances, it’s my job to encourage you to adopt healthier habits to optimize treatment results.

With skin typing & the Fitzpatrick scale as my guide, it’s possible to determine which skincare products & routines will best address their individual needs. Specializing in “Fitz skin” 4 – 6 allows me to address the needs of a community with skin presentations most estheticians aren’t familiar with.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Given that I’m still in esthetics school my journey as an esthetician has barely begun but that doesn’t mean I haven’t experienced challenges thus far.

Being a 35-year-old, divorced, mother turned student in a class full of 18 and 20 year old made me feel as though I had wasted so much time in my earlier years. Oftentimes, I can’t relate to the “freeness” they have as they aren’t parents yet, have amazing bodies, and not a single hint of wrinkles. I have to consciously remind myself that I’m exactly where I need to be, when I needed it, which is right now. In addition to handling the academic workload that comes with school, I juggle work and motherhood, so my time is extremely limited these days.

All of that being said, I know I can handle everything thrown at me because I have faith in myself & God. Whatever I can’t do, he’s already done, and all I have to do is have patience for the results to reveal themselves. It’s so important that we as women know that we can do whatever we set our minds to do, even if that’s later in life.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Any big plans?
Plans for the future include completing my education and becoming a licensed esthetician in December 2023, then being promoted into a practicing esthetician position at Center Medspa, where I’m currently working as a front desk receptionist.

Very few estheticians of color focus on skincare as a whole, as we tend to gravitate towards waxing, nails, hair & cosmetology post-graduation. Very few higher-end MedSpas such as the one I work for have Estheticians that look like me. I’m currently the first & only employee of color at Center Medspa so it’s a huge honor to represent myself & colorful community in a southern city such as Chattanooga, TN. I’m excited to be the face of black beauty featured on local billboards throughout Chattanooga.

I’ve also been personally invited by the founder of Protea (https://bookprotea.com) to join their platform to offer virtual skincare consultations to women across the country.
