Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Rae Greene.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a military wife, the mother of two young daughters, and a country music singer-songwriter. We lived in Southern Pines, North Carolina, and I performed locally in bars and at fairs & festivals. My true passion was writing original music, but there were very few opportunities in rural North Carolina for singer-songwriters. So I created and hosted a bi-annual event at The Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines, “Singer-Songwriters in the Round”, a showcase designed specifically for original music.
The show was a success, and as a result, I began hosting and performing in other original music showcases all across the state. As my career started to take off in NC, my fans and friends encouraged me to realize the bigger dream inside of me – to hear my songs on the radio. Chasing a commercially successful country music songwriting career meant a permanent move to Nashville. My husband was nearing the end of his Army career, so he took his last Army assignment as close to Nashville as possible, and our family of four moved to Tennessee in June 2019. I immediately began playing in writers’ rounds in Nashville and setting up co-writes with other writers and recording artists.
In November 2019, I was the grand prize winner of “Nashville Rising Song” for a song I had written back in Southern Pines – “How Lonely Looks on Me.” Winning that contest wasn’t a huge game-changer, but it did open up enough doors to help me start meeting with publishers and signed writers. In the four years that I’ve been here, I’ve had songs cut by independent recording artists like Ava Paige, Tory Grace, Jon Mullins, and Jessie Wilson. I’ve gotten to perform my original music in some pretty amazing places – WSM Radio, The Bluebird Cafe, and even the Ryman Auditorium.
In June 2022, Megan Moroney released “Fix You Too”, a song I co-wrote with Megan & Adam Wheeler. Megan earned a nomination for this year’s ACM award for “Best New Female Artist” and “Fix You Too” has now been streamed over 5 million times. In April 2023, Texas-based country artist Jessee Lee released “Where He Ain’t” – my first cut to be played in regular rotation on Texas country radio.
I still have a long way to go to reach all my songwriting goals and dreams. But I’m proud of the progress I’ve made so far, I’m so grateful for the support of my husband, and I’m beyond blessed to get to be Mama to my precious girls.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an unsigned songwriter in Nashville is incredibly difficult. I write a new song every day, Monday through Friday, and I perform in songwriter rounds each week. I do not get paid for any of that work. I love being a part of the Nashville songwriting community, and I am truly grateful every day that I get to live and work here. But Nashville is stereotypically a “10-year town”, and being broke is a very real part of the journey! To chase this dream, you have to surrender to the fact that you might never make any money at all.
I heard someone say – “If you can be happy doing anything else, you should do that. Anything else.” There are always going to be better singers, better guitar players, better lyricists, better track guys… you have to LOVE making music so much that you constantly strive to learn, adapt, and step outside of your comfort zone.
To say this is a struggle is a drastic understatement. But I know that at my core, I am a songwriter. And I know that I’m sharing the gifts and talents I’ve been given to the very best of my ability. And the dreamer in me continues to hold out hope despite it all!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in writing country music. My writing style has been influenced over the years by country legends like Hank Williams and The Carter Family, Loretta Lynn, and George Jones.
I love the powerhouse female vocals I heard on the radio in the 90s and 2000s – Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, and Leanne Rimes. I strive to write lyrics like my songwriting heroes- Leonard Cohen, Patty Griffin, Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, Nicolette Hayford, and Tom Douglas.
What are your plans for the future?
My future goals are:
1. Sign up with a publishing company.
2. Continue striving to write the best song I possibly can each day, and continue to expand my circle of co-writers.
3. Have one of my songs make it to country radio!
4. Build a long-term career writing for country radio, like my idol Hillary Lindsey.
5. Make my husband and daughters proud.
