Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenna O’Brien & Maggie Throckmorton. They and their team shared their story with us below:
SHEchiatry, PLLC was born out of the gap we saw in gender-specific mental health care following years of journaling around a creative space for healing. Women have unique mental health needs that must be addressed by women, for women.
Brenna O’Brien, LCSW birthed this concept as a place for women to just “be.” To come as they are. To let it all out. To heal. To have fun. After experiencing a tough transition in her own life, Brenna credits a strong group of women for bringing her back into her power. It was simply a deep knowing that she had to give back what was given to her.
Brenna brought the concept to her friend and now business partner, Maggie Throckmorton. “I wanted to do this with someone who was not only the most brilliant woman I knew, but someone who had a healing role in my own life, and was also not afraid to be disruptive in taking an edgier approach to wellness,” said Brenna. “This person was undoubtedly Maggie.”
“I was so thrilled and grateful that Brenna invited me into her dream. We have a deep connection, and from that, we knew we could build something powerful to strengthen women,” said Maggie. Maggie came up with the name “SHEchiatry” sitting at her dining table one Saturday morning. When she sent it to Brenna, she knew it was a perfect manifestation of her vision, yelling “That’s it!” With big plans in mind, they have trademarked it, and are creating a complete wellness brand for women.
SHEchiatry is more than a mental health practice. We are a community of women.
We are a safe space, but we are not your typical providers. We’re here to disrupt the mental health landscape for women and we coined the term “boutique mental health care…with an edge.” We use our personal experiences to inform the care we provide, and this makes us more compassionate, relatable providers.
Our business existed virtually until this month when we officially moved into our “home” in Berry Hill. We are beyond thrilled to now provide in-person AND virtual therapy, medication management, and a circle of womanhood throughout Tennessee.
We are also excited to share a novel group therapy concept we are developing, an approach that has never been done before with women. Our concept of community building will include weekly “Walk & Talks” at Percy Warner Park, dance movement therapy groups, and edgy groups to include, but not limited to “My shitty-ex” group. The crux of our mission can be summed up in one statement, “Name one thing more powerful than a group of women.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our vision is bold. At some point, we will offer services to women outside of Tennessee, but for now, we’re thrilled to be serving our community of Nashville and beyond.
Finding the right space took time. One of the first places we looked at did not want to lease to a women’s mental health practice…but they did lease the space to a testosterone clinic! West Iris is the perfect home for us, and Brenna is using her design sense to make it chic with irreverence, yet comforting and healing.
We also had to deal with life and the unexpected challenges it throws our way. Maggie was diagnosed with Stage II Triple Negative Breast Cancer in 2021, shortly after we formed our PLLC. However, Brenna is a big believer in timing, and she stayed the course with Maggie as she navigated treatment, always assuring her, “Everything will happen in perfect timing.” Maggie just celebrated her one year with no evidence of disease date in February 2023.
As you know, we’re big fans of SHEchiatry. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Boutique Mental Health Care (with an Edge). For Women. By Women.
At SHEchiatry, we believe that women are unique and require personalized care. Everything we are experiencing is connected, so the care we provide should be all-encompassing and holistic. We believe you should have a say in your care with access to any one, or all healing modalities that resonate with your soul. We are not pathologizing every behavior. You are not your family, your past, your trauma, or your symptoms. We are boutique mental health care providing therapy, medication management, and a circle of womanhood.
This means… We provide an intimate, safe, and relaxed feel with individualized, holistic, and comprehensive care by specialized (female) providers. (It’s a total vibe).
We work with a LIMITED number of women that allows for expedited, prompt, and flexible care with attention to detail and collaboration with our multidisciplinary team. We intentionally create the capacity to hold the space for your needs.
We are a small & close-knit team, working together for YOU. This is YOUR time. Concierge services are available for at-home therapy visits (yes girl, you heard that right). You are a part of our womanhood, building long-lasting relationships with our providers, as well as a community of like-minded women.
You also get access to our little black book of badass providers to accessorize (boutique pun intended) your healing journey. This is a table of women you WANT to sit with… We promise.
What does success mean to you?
Our success is based on the care and outcomes we provide to women. To make women feel seen, heard, understood, and validated. To help diminish symptoms that make life harder than it already is as a woman. To create a community for women who are experiencing isolation or frustration finding like-minded friends.
As we said above, creating a safe space and circle for women to come as they are, to let it all out, and to heal is our success.
Every provider in our close-knit SHEchiatry team has been carefully chosen to ensure that every woman who interacts with us feels the warmth and passion we have for her.
