Inspiring Conversations with Brad Phillips of Studio 101 Recording

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Phillips.

Hi Brad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was around 13 years old, I became interested in guitar and audio electronics. I was performing with live bands and had an interest in the audio/mixing side of performing. While on a vacation to Nashville, I visited Belmont University and fell in love. I never applied anywhere else. Went to Belmont in 1995 and completed a Music Business degree with an emphasis in audio engineering.

We lived in Nashville for a few years then decided to move home to south carolina in 2001. I decided to open a commercial studio space here in the Greenville/Spartanburg area in 2001. We had some success, but the market was tough at the time. Since 2010 this area of SC has grown tremendously. This has helped our customer base expand. Social media advertising as well as live video streaming has also propelled us into a bigger customer base.

We are looking to expand our facility this year to add an atmos mix room.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Studio ownership is possibly one of the most stressful small businesses in the US.

Sometimes customer loyalty in this business is really difficult. Plus, the covid shutdown recently affected the income of all of our current and potential customers.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We provide audio recording and production for artists, musicians, bands, churches, and many other organizations.

Our live-stream sessions are what we are most known for. This has opened many new doors to connect with customers. Plus, we have been able to work with several artists from television shows such as The Voice and American Idol.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Our industry is shifting to spatial audio. This is similar to the shift from Cds to MP3s. The atmos audio experience will be the next big thing in music.
