Inspiring Conversations with Tina Eberhart of Orchidz Organizing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Eberhart.

Hi Tina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Middle Tennessee, primarily in Murfreesboro. I grew up very poor and in a broken home but with one heck of a village. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Management/Administration in 2017 because I couldn’t pin down exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Also in 2017, I married the love of my life. We have 5 children ranging in age from 21 to 5. We are also proud parents to 7 dogs, 2 goats, and 2 cats!

I’ve always been about “a place for everything and everything in its place”. Friends and family will tell you even a quick visit can easily turn into a purging or organizing session. Before organizing, my work was primarily in the medical and hospitality fields. One day, after re-organizing yet another office in the medical practice I worked in, I was at my desk talking to my favorite coworker who was standing in the doorway, and it was like a bomb had gone off in my brain. I felt my eyes widen and realized I could be organizing full-time.

Then and there I decided to get the ball rolling. It just made sense. I’d get distracted by messes or the improper utilization/waste of space and supplies constantly. The urge to organize and bring order was overwhelming and was much stronger than the willpower I had to sit and do paperwork all day. I wasn’t exactly happy or much appreciated, was driving about 100 miles round-trip for work, and was so very under-stimulated. My full potential was not being utilized in that field.

In addition, over the past seven years, we have added four children to our family, totaling five. The first two came to us when we were in a very small three-bedroom, one-bath home. Creative and effective maximization and use of space and time took priority fast.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I didn’t expect it to be, but the experience has put many things into perspective. There have been several times when I was just ready to throw in the towel. The main struggles have been funding my business with personal finances and living in a rural area.

I’ve also found that many people are afraid they’re going to be judged or persuaded to get rid of all of their things and that the service(s) will be unaffordable. I don’t specifically target the aesthetic side. It genuinely brings me happiness to see the relief in clients that I’ve felt myself from simply decluttering and organizing.

This niche is unique and is considered by a lot of people to be more of a luxury, largely due in part to what they see on TV. Being organized is very beneficial to mental health, and it’s difficult for some people to make that connection.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Orchidz Organizing specializes in organizing; hence, the name. To me, this is helping clients step out of the seemingly endless rivers of “stuff” they’ve been wading through and teaching them how to stay out. I organize rooms, specific areas such as closets and pantries, and whole homes as well as small businesses and offices.

My focus is working alongside the client to get their problem areas handled and to get them feeling more confident in their abilities to tackle similar projects and take their lives and their homes back while not breaking the bank. Going for the glam is so much fun, but the majority of clients just want to breathe. I want them to know that they can start now, use what they have, and take baby steps to get to where they’re going. It’s a process, and sometimes not a pretty one.

I pride myself on being an organizer who listens, is patient, and understands what the client is going through emotionally, and the difficult decisions they’re having to make. While I struggle with being an introverted business owner with anxiety, once the connections are made, my clients are quickly seen as family.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the organizing industry will be around for a long time. There are so many different methods and products now, and people worldwide are realizing that addiction to stuff has become a big issue.

Also, a lot more people have become minimalists, so they’re purging and downsizing, which has led to a rise in the manufacture of tiny homes. It’s really exciting when you think about it.
