Conversations with Michael Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Taylor.

Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The journey, well it started with the fond memories of my grandfather showing me his love for the arts. From nights in opera halls to ballet in the summer put on by the local dance studio. He showed me a world outside of stereotypes. Being raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin showed me a different world than Tennessee. most children like myself at the time bounced from one thing to another.

First, it was theater, then painting, playing an instrument, to finally resting upon poetry. My grandmother being the educator that she was took me for every summer that I could remember to have me reading and writing polishing my skills in the English language. It was my fresh year of high school at Mesmer catholic high that I wanted to push my pen and joined the school’s poetry team after a short time with them we took second in the high school city Circuit Slam team.

After high school graduation, I was accepted into Lane College pursuing a bachelor’s in biology. That where I truly develop my craft as a young Thespis. Learning about so many different ideas and meeting so many different people and experiences. I was a kid in a candy store. After graduating in 2019, I didn’t know what I want to do. pursue a career in the field of science or pursue a career in spoken word poetry. I was at wit’s end.

Then the pandemic happened to allow me to develop myself and over time I figured it out, thus the idea of Y.C.R.E.W. was born as an artist collective. With team members Wisdom Way, and Candace Gains. Chunka Amaré Khan, Jarrett Harper, Sage Chase, Marcellus Leslie, and Jamala Mckenzie. Together we began to learn how to creatively ricochet energy wisely but we had to understand why starts with you.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Developing an idea and sticking to it it’s all about repetition habits and determination.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My craft is literary arts such as spoken word poetry. My most proud of being the founder of YCREW and sharing my passion for art with the young and old alike.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Spreading love. Because there’s too much hate in the world.
