Rising Stars: Meet Raquel Redd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Redd.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born and raised in Nashville, started working in makeup and then television production. After college (Berklee College of Music) I moved to West Hollywood where I was befriended by my childhood idol – RuPaul. RuPaul encouraged me to start performing as a drag queen at the local bars. Shortly after I was hosting 5 gigs a week and landed an independent record deal with Hollywood Giants Records.

I moved back to Nashville in 2013 and got involved in the local drag scene. I wasn’t accepted, ironically, so I decided to take my talents to live stream using my social media platforms. My late-night talk show “RKNLive” was born and is in its 5th year. It’s a variety show of sorts, with a gameshow segment, a satire news character named “Mya Pinion”, a top ten list, and more. I have a growing and loyal following who help support me and RKN.

I create everything you see on the show from the graphics and jingles, to the wigs and makeup. It’s the internet’s most entertaining one-woman show. Additionally, I produce media projects for local politicians and music artists.  It’s a dream job and will either make me rich or it’s the best resume I’ve ever created.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been ignoring what others think.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a one-woman production specializing in fabulous, unparalleled content. I also specialize in hosting and emceeing. I connect with people and enjoy listening to people’s thoughts and stories. I started a YouTube show called “Raquel Knows Nashville” where I stopped people on the street for rapid-fire interviews. It’s amazing what people will tell you when you have a pink wig and a microphone.

My late-night talk show unintentionally turned political during Trump’s administration. I don’t always share mainstream opinions and am often misunderstood by my LGBT brothers and sisters. Being blacklisted and boycotted by a community that fights for inclusion surprised me and is what sets me apart today. I encourage an open conversation on my show, where everyone is heard and respected.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
A healthy attitude. Your mindset determines everything. And a phat ass.
