Today we’d like to introduce you to Donny Fallgatter.
Donny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Sawdust & Whiskey in my garage. My wife wanted a piece of expensive furniture from a popular store in Green Hills, and I said, “I can make that!”
Before long, we had a few husbands and interesting whiskeys in my garage on weekends. I didn’t know if it would ever be more than that, but here we are.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a constant growing pain…which is obviously great for a business, but a lot of learning curves and expensive mistakes are on the way. I went from the garage to a small shared space. I wanted bigger and more unique slabs, so I started importing as well as using domestic logs.
I outgrew my spaces every year, and now we have two shops in Nashville and warehouse space in White Bluff. In the last few years, I partnered with an insane talent, Chandler Mitchell. We also added a Swiss Army knife named Shawn Massey, who’s been helping with everything from sanding to importing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our most popular table is one we call the Whiskey Drip. We carve it from a single log. Everything we make is a one-off and to the client’s specs to fit the space and character perfectly.
We use chemical stains and commercial-grade finishes. We started shipping Internationally last year, which was a big moment for us!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
We take risks and push ourselves to make heirloom quality pieces every time. I spend a lot of time talking with every client before and after the sale to ensure we get it right. Most of our clients become friends.
