Today we’d like to introduce you to George Collins. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Originally from Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, George moved to Boston, MA, in 2019 to study music at Berklee College of Music. After graduating, he moved to East Nashville, working as a freelance guitarist playing in the house band for The Pitch Meeting, Kitty Coen, Tanner Cherry, Gracia Harrison, and many others.
In his first month in Nashville, George played at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival with The Pitch Meeting, supporting artists such as Natalie Layne, Oliver Steele, and Walker Burroughs on the How and Cafe Stages.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an international student has its obstacles, as for four years, I was unable to work. However, now I am on “OPT,” which grants me access to work for a year.
The biggest challenge right now is applying for the O-1 Artist Visa, which, if my application is successful, will allow me to stay in the US.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a freelance guitar player, I am usually accompanying artists for shows and in recording sessions.
However, I also have a few side projects as I produce loft hip-hop beats and post them on Instagram and Tiktok, among other guitar-related videos. I actually got my start on social media over the pandemic posting guitar videos, some of which did quite well.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am very passionate about making coffee, grinding the beans, and weighing out the water… it’s a little obsessive.
