Daily Inspiration: Meet Runaway Angel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Runaway Angel.

Runaway Angel

Hello Runaway Angel. We’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi, we’re Stacey, Ann, and Cadence, and we make up the country trio Runaway Angel.

In 2013, we were all solo artists and friends based on Ontario, and we were starting to lose a bit of our love for music because the administrative aspects of owning a business were taking away from our time to be creative. Stacey eventually convinced us all to join forces and start a band together so we could share the workload as well as share the special moments with other people, and that’s how Runaway Angel began.

Since 2013, we’ve released two albums, 7 radio singles, toured Canada and Europe, and had multiple placements in film and television. In 2018, we took a 4-year break when Cadence was diagnosed with Leukaemia. When her treatments were unsuccessful, she ultimately had a life-saving bone marrow transplant in 2019. While her recovery took longer than we all expected, we are so grateful to have another chance to make music together and start this next chapter. Cadence has a place in Nashville now and splits her time between there and Canada and we wrote our latest single ‘Beach Please’ with Kate Malone while we were down there in January.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a mix. There have been amazing moments where it felt like everything was in place and a lot of times where things were really challenging. As three independent female musicians, sometimes it felt challenging to get heard, but we always tried to work really hard to play at the major label level, and although it took time, we were able to build a really supportive and dedicated fan base with grassroots methods. Financially, it can obviously be tough to support a music career, and we all worked so many side jobs to try and get things off the ground and keep things moving forward, but there were definitely some really tight times.

When Cadence was diagnosed with cancer, that was extremely challenging for all of us, we weren’t sure how things were going to end up or if she would even survive, and I think we all felt like that was likely going to be the end of the band and our careers forever. There was definitely a grief process involved for us all, and for Cadence, a lot of guilt for feeling like her illness didn’t just cut short her career but all of ours. It was a really hard few years, and we feel so grateful that ultimately we’ve been given the gift of a second chapter, and we’re really excited to see where it takes us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re a female country trio who write and perform our own music. We are known for writing fun and uplifting music filled with harmonies that people can really relate to and that we hope to create joy for the listener. We love writing together, and we feel it’s one of our greatest strengths.

While we are each great writers on our own, we come from really unique writing backgrounds and bring a super diverse set of skills to the writing room, which combined leads to some of our favorite work. We are most proud of our strength. We’ve been able to overcome some incredible challenges together as a band and still continue to love and support each other through it all, and that means a lot to us. The level of respect and understanding we have for each other has always kept us united.

What sets us apart from others is our live show, it’s really fun because we always just have so much fun with each other on stage and we think that’s something the audience can really feel. Our harmonies are also something people always compliment us about. We love going big with the harmonies because it’s something we loved about the groups we grew up listening to and when we are in harmony with each other, we just feel like we’re in harmony with the universe.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think the most important characteristics we all possess are persistence, patience, and dedication. We have overcome so many obstacles along the way, and being able to persevere through them all while staying patient and keeping our eye on the end game has allowed us to keep this band together for the long haul.

We’re all so dedicated to making great music and to making it together, and it’s kind of the central energy that keeps us connected.
