Today, we’d like to introduce you to Thomas James. Thomas was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Jantrice Johnson.
Hi Thomas, we’re so thrilled to have you sharing your story with us today. Maybe we can kick things off by having you introduce yourself to our readers? We’d love to have you go into your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was just getting out of the military and finishing up my college degree when my grandfather decided to retire from one of the family’s businesses. My grandfather opened one of the first barbershops in Murfreesboro, TN, University Barbershop. He worked there for several decades before my father took ownership. To learn the hands-on portion of the family business, I went to barber and cosmetology school. Since then I have written curriculums for different barber and cosmetology schools, opened my own barber school, and wrote an educational book which helps cosmetology and barber students get their license.
Please tell us more about your brand, Mr. State Board
Mr. Stateboard takes care of everything legal from a beauty industry standpoint nationwide. All the paperwork needed to own a school. Programs and curriculums on teaching within the school Getting a barber or cosmetology license School accreditation Hair braider registrations Keeping your hours current by providing Continuing Education seminars Basically I’m a one stop shop for all things dealing with paperwork in the Beauty Industry, nationwide. What sets me apart is the ability to adapt. When providing education, you have to adapt to the learner, to make a person “get it”. I feel I’m pretty good at adapting to different intelligences. As a brand I’m proud to say we filled a hole many people don’t know exist. The Beauty Industry is the same as any other goods and services industry. There are the goods and services, and then there is the industry. Mr State board has done a really good job at merging the Beauty with the Industry.
So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Jantrice Johnson, a realtor with Intero Real Estate Services and the founder of MUKA. For those who might not be as familiar, could you tell them a bit about your experience working with Jantrice?
JANTRICE IS AMAZING! I can’t think of any bad things to say about her. From the beginning I knew she was going to be more than a realtor. I came to Jan and told her I had a dream of buying my first home. I had no clue what I was doing. I told her I was a Veteran and was told all I needed was a realtor. Jantrice broke down what using a VA home loan meant and how it works. She then proceeded to ask me what I wanted in my dream home and gave me a sheet of all the homes that had the qualities I asked for. To put you where my head went, imagine how much your dream house cost-now add a zero on the end! I was astonished but Jantrice broke down the logistics of how the cost of houses work. From there she gave me a plan with a due date for us to go get my new dream home with the knowledge I just obtained. This plan also came with a mortgage banker to help me save money and build credit simultaneously. That was just my first experience. Since then I have leaned on her for guidance while on my entrepreneur journey. Home ownership was the beginning and the leverage you have from just that alone. I’ve since looked for commercial real estate and properties for future endeavors through Jantrice as well. She has shown time and time again how having leverage and ownership has perks farther than you could ever imagine.
