Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Wilder.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been singing and performing for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a somewhat musical household watching my dad play guitar and piano and we would sing together a lot and I think that’s what sparked that love for music. I remember being around three years old and forcing everyone in my household to watch me sing and dance to Britney Spears in our living room.
I did that a lot actually haha but I think that’s when I realized that performing was something that I loved doing and I think my parents saw that too. So it kind of just took off from there. I got into this really serious children’s choir that toured once a year and started voice lessons, dance classes, musical theater, singing competitions, etc. It was the one thing I did that never got old and it still hasn’t.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, haha but I don’t think anything worth doing is. It all continues to be a learning experience, that’s for sure. There are tons of ups and amazing things about this job but there are also tons of downs and a lot of “no’s”.
I honestly think the biggest struggle for me for a long time was retraining my brain to look at the “no’s” as “not yet’s” instead and to stop comparing my journey to other artists. They are all different and beautiful in their ways and coming to that realization has been a game changer for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a country singer/songwriter in Nashville, TN! The job comes with a lot of responsibilities, especially as an independent artist still growing my team, but I am first and foremost a singer and a songwriter.
Right now, I’m proud of the fact that this is what I get to do for a living and I’m doing it on my own. I grew up on a lot of pop as well as country music, so I have a ton of different influences that I think put a unique spin on my writing style and my songs.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I have been very very lucky in so many different ways. I have such a supportive family that has been rooting for me since day one, doing everything they know how to support me. I have an amazing group of friends here in Nashville that are also artists and we’re all chasing down the same crazy dream and I feel really lucky to have such supportive people in my life who get it.
I’ve also been really lucky to have worked with some amazing writers and producers that I look up to as creatives and as friends and that I’ve learned so much from. So I would say luck has been on my side in those aspects and so many others. The bad things that happen I try to think of as learning experiences that are bound to happen at one point or another in my career.
