Rising Stars: Meet Destiné Perkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiné Perkins.

Destiné Perkins

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got started singing in first grade at Lakeview Elementary. Our school was having a talent show and I knew I wanted to be on that stage. I didn’t know what my talent was but I was determined to find something so I went through them all and decided to sing and I’ve been singing ever since.

I started rapping in 6th grade making beats on desks and freestyling at I.T Creswell. From then on, I furthered my talents at NSA where I was in choir, Pop Ensemble, and swing band. I met my best friend and the father of my child while I was in high school he was a Dj and pushed me DAILY to be an Artist.

He was killed about two weeks after I found out I was pregnant. After he died, I was determined to be the Artist he believed I could be so I dropped my first song. He inspired me to go after my dreams!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road but every lesson is a blessing.

Being a single parent is one of the hardest struggles for me. Trying to go after my dreams and also stay grounded for my child. Also, the industry is just grimy and people just aren’t real anymore.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer, songwriter, and rapper. I write mostly R&B but I am Genrefluid and can sing and write any genre. I specialize in bringing joy to others and being a light to those in my presence. I am known for being goofy, confident, positive and unapologetic. Musically, I am most proud of my song dance!

What sets me apart from others is my purpose! I know I was put on this earth to change it for the better. I aim to teach people about self-love, having a positive mindset, and changing their way of thinking to lead to a better life. I know I’m chosen because I’m not driven by money and most people in this industry and the world are.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being happy, uplifting others, and changing as many people’s lives as I can for the better once I’ve accomplished that I’ve done what I was placed here to do!
