Daily Inspiration: Meet Sean McGee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean McGee.

Sean McGee

Hi Sean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started taking photos with my Dad when I was 10 years old. He was and still is a hobbyist photographer and taught me about composition and light. This was also pre-digital so I had the chance to learn on film as well which looking back is special.

I stopped shooting as a teenager but always remembered a few of the things he taught me. I ended up finding my way back to it years later. I was working on a project that required photography and I was so caught up in the photo aspect that I gave up that original project and decided to just keep the camera.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Man, what a great question haha. I don’t know if there is a road at all. When you start at zero you need to shoot as much as possible but also figure out what it is you want to shoot. How will you make a living doing this? Who will want to hire you?

I spent 4 years from the time of picked up a camera before I was able to quit my day job and start doing it full-time. It can be so rewarding and also so demoralizing. The only path to success is relationships with the right people with the power to hire you and the quality of your work. It takes years to develop both.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography and a couple of avenues of video: music videos, weddings, and highlight videos for different brands/live shows, etc.

I think I’m most proud of my portrait work and music videos because I love writing treatments for them and feel like I can come up with fairly original ideas.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We’re all getting replaced by AI. There’s nothing else to say, unfortunately.
