Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Rhodes.
Hi Dakota, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got a guitar for my 12th birthday after my mom realized how much I loved singing and music at the time. I started to write my songs and was inspired by artists like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.
I fell in love with the process of songwriting and performing, doing many local shows with crowds of up to 5,000 people. I started posting covers and original songs on YouTube through all of my teen years up until now.
I have continued this journey for nearly 15 years now and I currently write, sing, and produce my music as well as work for Songfinch, writing custom songs for many people!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road is never easy. There have been many great times and many not-so-great times. Times when I felt like I was on top of the world, and times when I thought about throwing in the towel. But that’s all part of the journey and how it leads you to where you’re supposed to be.
Sometimes outsider’s opinions have thrown me off course and I’ve had to learn to just keep moving forward. Sometimes it’s more of a struggle of comparison and seeing what others are doing. You try it for yourself, it doesn’t work and wonder what you’re doing wrong. The answer is – nothing. Everyone’s path is unique and individual to them!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve had some cool moments along the way. One stand-out moment that first comes to mind is Shania Twain posting my cover of her song “You’re Still the One.” The traction the cover got as well as the Spotify single blew my mind and still does!
Another thing I’m proud of is getting to work for Songfinch. To be able to piece together someone’s story in such intricate detail and make them feel like they’re reliving that moment they hope to capture is such an amazing feeling!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would have to say consistency. I think being able to regularly tell yourself to keep going, keep making music, keep posting, and try is essential to gaining ground towards success.
