Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella Wagner.
Hi Ella, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Ella Wagner and I am a singer-songwriter from Mechanicsville, VA. I began writing songs when I was 13 years old but have only really begun pursuing it over the last year.
I started by recording songs in my attic and playing at local open mics. Before I knew it, I was playing at small festivals and my slots at some venues in the area. Through this process of trying to hone my skills as a performer and songwriter, I was supported by such a loving community of family and friends. And although Virginia will always be home, I knew that music would take me to Nashville.
This fall, I began as a freshman at Belmont University and couldn’t be happier. I am double majoring in Music Business and Songwriting and am so grateful for the opportunity to study what I love and join such a vibrant music community.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first got to Nashville, I was pretty intimidated by the level of talent.
And especially being at Belmont with so many young, accomplished individuals, I feel as though I need to hurry up and make it. I mean, it’s called Music City for a reason. However, collaborating with such talented individuals, I have gained confidence in my art. My music is not “lesser than”, it’s “different than.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an 18-year-old Americana/Country artist and songwriter. I generally write about heartbreak, growing up, and my life in Virginia. Especially for people my age, those who listen to my music have said that my lyrics are cutting and relatable. Although I am usually just vocals and guitar, I do pick up the banjo now and then.
What I am most proud of is the sense of drive I have had in my career. I’ve never had a manager or booking agent. Although my parent has been incredibly supportive of my music, I have taken great pride in building my career on my own. I am in the process of preparing an album to be released next spring completely written and funded by me. It’s an amazing feeling when something you build is brought to life.
One thing that sets me apart from others is my background. I am biracial, half white, and half Asian Indian. This is something I have never seen represented in country music. It’s also a front on which I feel I need to defend my “countryness.” However, many people have told me how cool it is that there’s an Indian country singer and I know how good it feels to see yourself represented on that stage.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I learned a while ago I can’t assume other people are better than me. It undermines myself and makes me less confident in my work. I have to trust in my music and artistry.
