Daily Inspiration: Meet Deligah Grier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deligah Grier.

Deligah Grier

Hi Deligah, we are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It began with me picking up a guitar in the 3rd grade. My obsession with the music of the 80s and the emotions that it inspired in me. From love to anger, there was always a song for my moment. My mother’s extended family was into music with my aunt in a band when she was younger and my mom briefly dancing background for James Brown. Music was where my peace was. Fast forward to becoming a rapper in Atlanta at the age of 14. I copied a verse from NWA and then realized this was just poetry.

I was already into Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks. So, I became a performing rapper at the age of 15. I’ve signed 3 independent record deals that were to be distributed by Universal Records. However, that was short-lived and never became a release. I began producing my beats after working with other producers who were eager to share the recipe. DJ Smurf from Atlanta was one producer who had the factors for production.

Fast forward to 2023. I am an instrumental music producer. I have released over 400 projects. I use my everyday life as inspiration for my music. I focus on creating an atmosphere within the track and telling the story through arrangement and effects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Music has caused two important relationships of my past to end.

I walked away from music for several years for love. The love left and the music haunted me. When my mother passed away some years ago, I was lost.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I produce mood-based instrumentals. I try to capture the essence of the title of the track and express the emotional state I’m in through sound and effects.

I always wanted to sing so I did it as LEDGRIA Stone. I was able to express in words the struggles of my heart and my life just as I did as a rapper. I don’t sample music of the past. I create new music for future samplers.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I had a chance to get a record deal with Coastal Records some years ago.

However, they wanted to reproduce my title track City Streets just to gain publishing points. I declined. I now know the business side of music. I reflect on that choice as a mistake.
