Community Highlights: Meet Chris Pierce of Hermitage Golf Course

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Pierce.

Chris Pierce

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got my start at Hermitage because they needed extra help, I was playing and practicing all the time trying to do the mini-tour route professionally, so they approached me one day if I wanted to work. I said “yes” and fell in love with the work environment.

After 4 months outside they brought me into the pro shop to start working shifts inside and loved that even more. When I knew my professional playing days were coming to an end Jim Vernon who was the Director of Golf at the time approached me about a full-time position, and I didn’t even let him finish the question I said “Yes!”

I started my full-time position in February of 2012 and have loved every minute of the Hermitage Golf Course. Then in 2017, Jim Vernon Director of Golf retired from Hermitage, and that started my journey to my position today with the company.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not all been smooth. I think with any transition and any leadership role there are always ups and downs. We have a great staff here at Hermitage that makes this job a lot of fun and enjoyable. I try and stay out of the way and let them all do what they are so good at, and that seems to work out very well!

When I first started in my role I think the hardest part for me was learning how to lead employees who were older than myself. I know that sounds funny but for a 29 year old that was something I needed to learn and honestly learn quickly for a company like this.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hermitage Golf Course?
Hermitage Golf Course is a daily fee high-end public golf course in Old Hickory TN. Established in 1987 we are a 36-hole high-end daily fee golf course. Set in Old Hickory, Tennessee on the banks of the Cumberland River we have been voted the top public course in the state of Tennessee many times.

We have also won numerous other awards. We have 8 cottages on site they stayed rented out month after month. They will house stay and play packages to wedding guests. Yes, we also host over 50 weddings a year at Hermitage Golf Course. With two championship golf courses, cottages, and a bar and grill we have something on site for anyone.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am terrible at answering questions like this because I am not very interesting or I don’t think I am HAHA.

I will say that I still coach high school athletics so that is probably my biggest hobby. I still coach high school football. I have done that since I was out of high school. I love being around the game and helping the next generation of young athletes.
