Inspiring Conversations with Tish Owen of Goddess and the Moon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tish Owen.

Tish Owen

Hi Tish, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I opened my store, Goddess and the Moon, on 2nd Avenue in downtown Nashville in 1991. My store was a metaphysical shop and I did a tarot reading from that space. I kept a store for 25 years until it just became too expensive to rent space in Nashville.

I had a very elderly mother and a husband with health problems and that aided my decision to close the store. I now read tarot and offer past life regressions, reiki, mediumship, and chakra balancing. Some of my clients have been coming to see me for 30 years. I have a very loyal clientele. Thanks to technology I can have sessions with people all over the world and it is always thrilling to speak with someone who lives in another country. I have read tarot and provided other readers for numerous parties for the famous, corporations, company parties, bridal parties, birthday parties, and just regular folks.

Through my work, I have been able to meet many famous people in the music industry, and it is always delightful for me. I have been interviewed for radio, television, magazines, and newspapers over the years. I was featured in the A&E television program Cursed. I have four books to my credit, two fiction and 2 non-fiction, and I am now working on a Tarot book. I travel to festivals where I facilitate classes and workshops. I am the coordinator of the Pagan Unity Festival which is a 27-year-old festival in Middle Tennessee.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a small business owner is never a smooth road. There are many hoops to jump through to rent a space, and pay taxes. and buy the correct licenses too. For my business, it is a bit harder. Many people don’t trust psychics and believe we are frauds. There is that stigma to overcome. I have worked hard over the years to be honest with people, even when they didn’t want to hear the truth.

Rent prices in Nashville have risen over the years and sometimes it was a challenge to make the rent. I closed my shop because I could not justify working long, hard hours just to hand that money over to a landlord. And do we even want to discuss the parking wars? But, my clients make everything worthwhile for me. I would not change a thing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I feel that I help people who are searching for direction and in need of answers. I do this through psychic readings, mediumship, past life regression, reiki healing, and chakra balancing. I give people the truth, so if you don’t want to hear the real answer you probably shouldn’t ask me the question in the first place.

There are plenty of readers who will tell a client what they want to hear. I don’t tell clients what they want to hear but what they need to hear to solve their issues. I believe I have an important responsibility to my clients to help them and give them the best advice I possibly can. They depend on me for that, and in many cases take my advice. I give comfort when I can and information as well.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My entire business is about taking risks. Going into business for yourself is a risk. Being in a business that many people disdain, is certainly a risk.

Telling people the truth and not pulling any punches is a risk. Believing in energies which many people scoff at is a risk. Being a woman in business is a risk. I have loved every minute of it.
