Exploring Life & Business with Emma Nelson of Nutrition by Emma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Nelson.

Emma Nelson

Emma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up as a competitive dancer fueled my passion for sports performance and health, but a lack of reliable nutrition resources for athletes led me down a path of personal experimentation and dieting. This innocent pursuit turned into struggles with weight, body dysmorphia, and anxiety around food. Recognizing the prevalence of extreme dieting in our culture and the associated multibillion-dollar industry, I decided to pursue a career in nutrition.

Once I began working as a registered dietitian, I took jobs in the hospital, long-term care, and community settings, but I never felt like I was where I was supposed to be. Working for a broken healthcare system where I had little time and short interactions with my patients, I felt like I was not helping. This inspired me to start Nutrition by Emma in August 2022. I now own and operate a virtual private practice that focuses on nutrition and health coaching. I guide clients to move away from fad diets and transform their relationship with food.

No matter the nutrition goal, I want my clients to know their “why”. I believe in individualized, holistic care, valuing each client’s unique experiences and aiming to help them become their best selves, both inside and out.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my private practice has not been easy. I have experienced financial struggles and obstacles in business that I never expected. I learn something new every single day. Despite any losses or setbacks I’ve experienced, the journey has proven to be well worthwhile. Nothing is a failure if you don’t quit!

I have also had to learn that it’s okay to ask for help. Delegating tasks such as marketing and advertising has been a game-changer for the way I operate in business. While it is an investment, I have had to learn where my time is most valuable, and to relinquish some of the control!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My practice is virtual, meaning I conduct Telehealth nutrition coaching sessions. I do accept insurance in my practice. I work with orthopedic companies in the the area, such as Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, Middle Tennessee Spine and Joint Center, and Elevate 615 to help with patient outcomes with orthopedic health.

I work with many active individuals wanting to maximize their fueling strategies for injury healing and prevention. With all of my clients, I emphasize the importance of having a healthy relationship with food. I work to debunk dieting fads and myths and help my clients find the balance between what is optimal, and what is realistic. I love working with clients who are aligned with this messaging, and who are open to improving their mindset around food.

I offer 1:1 and group nutrition coaching, as well as accountability programs. I often visit teams and school organizations and speak to student-athletes about the importance of nutrition & health for their sport. I am also active online and post lots of free Instagram content as an obligation to spread the truth in a world of nutrition misinformation!

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned that nothing goes as planned! I used to try to plan and strategize my every career move. It’s a great thing to have goals, however it’s also wise to keep your options open.

You never know what passions will grow or shrink, who you’ll meet, or what opportunities will fall into your lap. Being adaptable and open-minded is key.
