Rising Stars: Meet Alex Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Hughes.

Alex Hughes

Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My music journey started at a young age, around 7 years old, performing at The Calgary Stampede and small events around Calgary, Alberta. It’s taken me to Los Angeles, where I lived for a few years in my early 20s, and all across Canada performing at rodeos and festivals. I’ve been lucky to open for artists like Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon, and even Kenny G and Babyface when I lived in LA. I was a Project WILD top 12 finalist which is a prestigious artist development program in Alberta, as well as a Country Music Alberta’s Horizon Female Artist of the Year nominee this year.

My latest single, “Until This Fire Dies”, produced by award-winning Dan Swinimer (Jojo Mason and Madeline Merlo), embodies my deep-rooted affection for country music while infusing it with a modern twist. This song has had a great response, I was lucky to be chosen for the coveted cover spot on Apple Music Canada’s “Canada’s Country” editorial playlist and had the opportunity to perform the song live on Global Calgary in November 2023.

I feel like I’m finally finding my stride and unique voice as an artist. I like the idea of bringing some fiery passion from a female’s perspective to a male-dominated genre.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t know if I’ve ever met another artist who’s truly had a smooth journey as this is an industry of ups and downs, of which I’ve had many. I’ve learned that constancy is key and hard work always pays off. I’ve found it to be really important to make as many good connections as you can and to try and surround yourself with great supporters and like-minded people who are also honest.

It takes a long time to figure out who you are as an artist, I’m still figuring that out, and I believe it’s really important to be creative and experiment and try new things too – this will help you grow. You will make mistakes, some of my friends have been trusting in opportunities that didn’t pan out or putting way too much effort and energy into things that aren’t serving me. You have to learn to be flexible and try and be grateful for every little thing along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Pop Country Vocalist and Singer/Songwriter. My style combines a penchant for pop beats infused with contemporary country flair. I’m a passionate vocalist and try to infuse my many different influences with everything from Old Country to Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop into the music I create. My latest release, “Until This Fire Dies” is the perfect example of this as it is a very commercial-sounding country song, but my voice brings layers of those influences.

At live shows, I like to try and take covers and make them completely my own, I also like to sing and perform songs that are challenging and can be surprising. For example, last year at The Calgary Stampede Nashville North Stage I ended my set performing Misery Business by Paramore with my full band and in sparkly pink Cowboy boots.

What matters most to you? Why?
Music for the soul. I love to sing and perform to invoke feelings and give people an experience. This is why I continue to create, to share that with an audience.
