Check Out Jonathan Soul’s Story

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Soul.

Jonathan Soul

Jonathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to Nashville almost ten years ago with a desire to work on the craft of songwriting, performing, and growing my sound as a recording artist. As I got more involved with artistic communities like Belcourt Taps, Nashville Tour Stop, Pindrop, and Jesus in a Bar, I found a musical identity that is true, real, and authentic.

Music started for me early. As a kid, I saw my dad playing the piano and creating this symphony of sound that made me feel safe, whole, and seen. It was my first church experience, and I bring that level of musicality to my recordings and life performances. My mom has always encouraged my creativity with words; she is the main reason I found the courage to believe in my songwriting and myself as an artist.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since moving to Nashville, I have had several different jobs. I have been a janitor (the best and hardest job I ever had), sold hymnals over the phone, sold furniture, been offered leadership roles in the furniture industry, and managed a vocal studio. It has been a lot of ups and downs, self-doubt and hyper-self-criticism.

Comparison truly is the thief of joy, and I allowed myself to live a joyless existence in the music scene for years. Only after I was encouraged and brought into the community did the road start smoother.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of creating music rooted in the true, the good, and the beautiful.

I create moments in each of my sets that allow my audience to know that they are seen, loved where they are at, and invited to grow into the best version of themself.

I have a distinctly faith-focused worldview that colors my music without being preachy…a view that unites on universal struggles of wanting to be loved, seen, known, and heard.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
There is no luck, only trust and surrender that God will bring me where I need to be in his timing.
