Meet McKenzie Mix

Today, we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie Mix.

McKenzie Mix

Hi McKenzie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started photography by shooting at my mom’s boutique in our small town, Lafayette, TN. It instantly grew from there! I went from shooting models to shooting full wedding days in a short amount of time; word of mouth spread like crazy. I went through college and received my Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design at Lipscomb University, which has helped me in the back end of my photography business. I have been able to create my own logos, graphics, websites, etc.

In 2020, I went full-time with photography! I’ve been so blessed to travel to so many places to shoot weddings, elopements, or shoots. I’m living my dream. Honestly, it has been nothing short of amazing!

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A lot of my struggles were learning how to do things on the backend of business. Sure, its great to know how to work a camera and create your own individual art through that lens, but the backend of running a business took a little work.

Luckily, my mom has been an entrepreneur for 15 years, which is great to look to! I also do Wedding Videography (which is a whole other ball game) — It took a lot of time on YouTube, taking videography educational classes, and a lot of trial and error to learn the systems and what it takes to create a full wedding film.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My goal for when others look into my photography is to see that I’ve captured in the moment memories. I lean towards a documentary style photography which tells the story of a wedding day through my lens when raw moments are happening.

Not much posing or directing goes on for me or my couples. I love capturing the in-between moments, so when my couple looks back at their wedding gallery 10+ years down the road, they remember how that day FELT. Wedding days can be such a blur, I want to document my couples story, their people, their love and be able to tell that story through my camera lens. I specialize in Wedding + Elopement Photography and Videography. I am most proud that I am able to connect with my wedding couples.

For me, it’s not just another wedding. I am SO excited for every wedding I am able to shoot. It is most important for me to be my wedding couples friend. It has me document their day more intentionally and allows them to come back to me for later moments in life. (Maternity shoots, First Birthday’s, etc.) I am very personable, and I hope that sets me apart from others.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To let it be. Wedding days can be so hectic, and so organized and time-sensitive. It’s best to let the day be and capture it exactly how its going.

Don’t force anything (you’ll be able to tell in photos or videos). One of the other biggest lessons I’m still learning is to balance life and work. When you work for yourself (especially at home) it’s easy to get that life/work balance out of whack. Something I’m still working on.
