Today, we’d like to introduce you to Andi Dunn.
Hi Andi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Honey Creative’s story began in 2015 in my home state of Kentucky with two other business partners and me. We worked at an in-house agency called the Hive at the University of Kentucky’s Arts & Sciences department. With a vision of our talents as a full-service creative agency, Honey Creative came to life.
Though the journey took an unexpected turn when my partners departed shortly after our launch, I remained steadfast in my commitment to our shared vision while narrowing our offerings to brand and web design. In 2016, I found myself drawn to the vibrant energy of Nashville, where I discovered a new purpose for Honey Creative.
Inspired by my (now) husband’s involvement with a local nonprofit, I shifted our focus to serving what we now call “hives with heart,” or small, service-based businesses and organizations that are passionate about fulfilling their purpose. Over the years, I have refined our collaborative process, emphasizing the historical backgrounds of our clients and their communities to create rebranding efforts that deeply resonate with their audiences. We partner with other creatives, and what used to be a one-woman show has slowly grown to include a team again. I love having fun and believe the process of a rebrand should be just as gratifying as the deliverables!
Recently, my family moved to Atlanta, and I recently celebrated becoming a new mom in July 2023. While owning a business (in a new city) and being a mom has had its challenges, each project is an opportunity for me to pour my heart and soul into designs that reflect our clients’ visions and forge meaningful connections with their communities.
Today, Honey Creative stands as a testament to our journey – from the hive of creativity where it all began to the vibrant city of Nashville, where we found our purpose, and now in Atlanta, where I hope to continue to build our team. As the founder, I am proud to lead a team that continues to make a lasting impact in the world of branding and design.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating the entrepreneurial path is never a smooth ride; the twists and turns infuse the journey with excitement. Parting ways with my original business partners early on presented a significant challenge. Beyond the surge in workload, what I truly missed was the camaraderie of a like-minded and enjoyable team.
In 2018, I also encountered a particularly arduous project. We’ve all encountered difficult clients where a missed red flag led to misalignment. However, this client took it to another level, culminating in a scathing four-page letter post-contract termination, filled with personal attacks and abuse. Recovering my confidence as both a designer and a business owner following that incident required considerable time (and numerous therapy sessions!).
And, of course, in 2020, what a challenging time for all of us! The pandemic was ill-timed and brought on significant financial struggles throughout that year. Overall, I’m grateful for the lessons learned over the years and the experiences that have led me to where I am today!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Honey Creative?
Honey Creative isn’t your typical branding studio—it’s a collaborative hub led by women passionate about crafting compelling narratives. We don’t just work for our clients; we work with them, partnering with business owners and nonprofit leaders to create branding and website designs that truly resonate and help them pollinate positive change.
We’re most well known for our rebranding expertise, especially in the nonprofit/social enterprise space, where community engagement is key. We kick off each project with surveys to ensure our designs speak directly to the heart of the brand and the people who interact with it every day. This personalized approach sets us apart and makes us feel part of the team.
And let’s not forget about Honey-Do Days! It’s a client favorite—a full day of design dedicated to ticking off our clients’ honey-do lists. It’s our way of staying super focused and delivering quick turnarounds that our clients love.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future the hope is to continue to build out our team and. establish an office space that serves as a collaborative hub for artists and other entrepreneurs.
