Jacob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story starts with my faith in Christ. It is the foundation of my life and what my business relies on. I got into designing homes as an adolescent at nine and decided to pursue it further through education. As a sophomore in school, I started my first real-world design job, staging homes and assisting a showroom designer.
I pivoted during the pandemic to join a team of real estate professionals, helping them develop an interior design division of the company. I realized that if I can create for another company, I can create a company for myself. That is how the House of Canaan was born. I wanted a business that reflects the same values and principles instilled in me, such as integrity, passion, and innovation.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to the destination never looks like what we think it should. I struggled with leaving the division of the company that I helped create.
In a sense, it felt like I was abandoning them. I struggled with self-doubt and wondered whether I was competent to run everything on my own. I still struggle with some of these things, but the goal is to create spaces and be a blessing to the people who open their homes to me.

Many people think that designing spaces is just fluffing pillows or selecting paint colors. I believe that design can be broken up into two categories: pre-construction and post-construction.
Pre-construction design is categorized as space planning, floor planning, finish selections, and more. Post-construction design is categorized as furniture placement, decor, and paint selections. At House of Canaan, we specialize in the pre-construction and can walk a client through the post-construction phase.
