Today, we’d like to introduce you to Naina Jain.
Hi Naina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in India with my grandparents, and traditional Ayurvedic practices like seasonal eating, sattvic foods, and others are embedded in our way of life. My grandfather was an Ayurvedic practitioner, and I used to practice yoga with him every morning; thus, my connection with Ayurveda began organically.
When I moved to the United States, particularly in college, I somehow lost those routines, and it wasn’t until my late 30s that I rediscovered the incredibly useful practice of Ayurveda. I remember very clearly my daughter was about two months old with some type of rash, and the only solution offered was steroids. That was the moment I said, “Okay, I am not comfortable with this; what would I do if I was back in India with my grandparents? How would they approach this?”
I remember getting on Amazon and ordering oils and herbs to make massage oil in my kitchen. I used it on her for about two weeks, and the rash cleared up. That was the moment I decided to start writing about different herbs and the principles of Ayurveda, creating the starting point of what became Marigoldbub.
The initial intent wasn’t to turn it into a business, it started with writing about the benefits of herbs, the fourth trimester (1000 year old practice in Ayurveda) and so on. I found myself signing up for courses to learn more, experimenting with more home remedies, and then making items for friends and families. This truly gave me joy; that is when I decided that perhaps this is where I need to spend my energy.
From there, the journey began to find manufacturers that understood my vision and were able to stay true to the formulations. Soon, Marigoldbub launched its first product – calming baby massage oil (which I still use for myself and my kids).
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a small business is never easy, but it has been a fun, exhausting, yet enjoyable journey. There was a lot to learn about launching a new business, social media, product pricing, etc., and as a business owner, it is all on you. I have to do research, build, and adapt continuously. This has forced me to be scrappy and effective and to learn from others.
Another challenge is educating folks on the benefits of Ayurveda. While prevalent in East Asia for thousands of years, the Western world is still learning about the modalities of Ayurveda, and I often find myself as a coach and mentor teaching them everything from what it is, how it can be used, and why it is a preferable option in today’s environment.
I will say that I do enjoy teaching and collaborating with other Eastern wellness practitioners. It has opened my horizons in wonderful ways that were not expected.
We’ve been impressed with Marigoldbub LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Marigoldbub is purely a labor of love and was created to make the ancient science of Ayurveda easy to understand, relatable, and applicable to the daily lives of parents. Our intent is to offer authentic, exceptional products created with your family’s well-being in mind by combining rich tradition, plant-based science, and above all – Love.
We are the only Ayurveda-based company in the United States (made in the USA) focused on mothers and babies. We are a minority-owned and women-owned business that partners with other women-owned businesses. In addition to being cruelty-free, our products are vegan and free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, mineral oils, palm oil, silicones, sulfates, propylene glycol, phthalates, GMO, PEGs, TEA, and DEA.
Above all, we want our customers to realize there are other, perhaps more effective approaches to health and wellness besides what they may have been brought up with. Our customers love us not only for the products but also for the education and support we offer by simplifying Ayurvedic practices.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Marigoldbub started during the pandemic, so we became stronger and more resilient from that experience.
At the same time, people were isolated, giving them time to look beyond their normal approaches to life, including skincare. So, one lesson we learned was that people, when given the chance, can discover non-traditional methods of caring for themselves.
